Washington-Liberty track-and-field teams sweep Spartan Classic

With multiple individual winners, the Washington-Liberty Generals won the girls and boys team titles at the recent Spartan Classic track-and-field meet at Broad Run High School in Ashburn.

The girls won the 13-team event for the second straight year, scoring 141 points. The boys totaled 133.5.

The championships were the first of the outdoor spring season for the Generals, as both teams enjoyed significant success during the indoor winter campaign.

“Everything kind of fell right for the teams and they had a wonderful meet and performed well,” Washington-Liberty coach John Bacon told ARLnow. “It was a lot of fun for them.”

The Washington-Liberty girls had four individuals lead the way by winning two events each at the Spartan Classic.

Ella Kaplan was the most active for the Generals by winning the triple jump (35-4) and 300-meter dash (46.87) and placing second in the 100 hurdles and third in the high jump. She was chosen the girls Athlete of the Meet.

Gabriela Netwall won the long jump (17-9) and 400 (56.29) and ran on a relay. Eve Jungman won both throws, the discus (105-8) and shot put (34-11), and Morgan Brown was first in the 100 dash (13.07) and 200 (26.43). She also was 15th in the long jump.

Washington-Liberty won the girls 4×100 relay (49.76) and was second in the 4×800.

Finishing third in events were Alba Edsall (800), Mina Dowler (3,200) and Hayden Lee (400). Heidi Kim was fourth in the 200 and eighth in the 100.

Annabelle Cordero was sixth in the 3,200, Camille Walker was eighth in the 100 hurdles and ninth in the discus and triple jump, Harper Dempsey was eighth in the 400 and 11th in the 200, Fiona Hendry was 10th in the 100 hurdles and 12th in the 300, and Sophia Collins was 11th in the 1,600.

The W-L boys had two double-winners. Ian Crowley was first in the 100 hurdles (15.5) and 300 (40.56) along with a second in the high jump with a personal-best leap of 5-10. He was chosen as the boys Athlete of the Meet. Carson Owens won the 100 dash (11.33) and 200 (22.74) and was third in the long jump.

The Generals’ other individual winner was Henry Brys in the 800 (2:03.61). The 4×100 (43.7) and 4×800 (8:33.17) relays were first with the 4×400 second.

Second individually for W-L was Morgan Fritz in the 3,200 and Elijah Purdy was third in the 800.

Nico Docena had a busy meet. He was third in the 110 hurdles, fourth in the long jump, sixth in the triple jump and eighth in the 300.

Lando Reed was fifth in the 100 and 200, Matthew Abramson was sixth in the 400 and ninth in the triple jump, and Del Conyers was seventh in the 110 hurdles and 12th in the 300.

Others with contributing finishes were Brandon Kaplan, Zach Meehan, Nick West, Kyle Quattlebaum, Michael Barber, Alessandro Piosa, David Holcolm, Dashiell Cathey and Dae’Ron Matthews.
