For the first time in many years, a Yorktown High School boys basketball player has been chosen to an all-state team.
Jake Coulam, a 5-foot-11 junior point guard, recently was selected to the Virginia High School League’s Class 6 second team, being rewarded for his performance during the 2024-25 season.
Coulam was a top scorer for the Patriots, averaging 12 points per game. He also led the squad in three-point baskets with 50, and was tops in assists by dealing six per contest.
Coulam made 40 percent of his three-pointers and scored 300 points. He also averaged two steals per game and 3.5 rebounds.
The last Yorktown players to make all-state teams are thought to be Rob Anderson in the late 1990s and Daryl Armstrong in 1989.
This past season, Coulam helped Yorktown tie a single-season program record with 20 wins, as the Patriots earned the top seed in the Liberty District tournament and reached the semifinals of the 6D North Region tourney.
Yorktown coach Joe Keimig often talked about Coulam’s consistent play throughout the season, from game one until the Patriots’ season-ending loss to Westfield in the region semifinals.
In that region semifinal, Coulam scored 13 points, had four assists and as many rebounds, made three three-poiners and had one steal and one rebound.
Coulam was three-for-three shooting from the floor in the fourth period, with his last shot being a three-pointer.
In addition to being chosen all-state, Coulam was selected as the district’s Player of the Year and was picked first-team all-region this past season. He was one of the top three-point shooters in the region.
Coulam was the only Liberty District player chosen all-state.
