Sometimes overlooked in the crush of Arlington springtime sports is George Washington University’s home baseball season at Barcroft Park.
In a long-standing agreement with Arlington, George Washington has been playing home games at the artificial-turf Tucker Field venue at Barcroft Park since 1993.
Entering this season, the Revolutionaries owned a 500-331-1 home record at the 500-seat South Arlington park. The team compiled a 21-10 record at Tucker Field last season and stood 13-9 through April 5 action this spring.
Games for George Washington’s home contests usually begin in the afternoons on weekdays with starting times from 1 to 3 p.m., then sometimes in the morning on weekends.
The Revolutionaries have eight regular-season home games remaining at Tucker Field this season, with the next a 3 p.m. start Tuesday (April 15) against Virginia Military Institute. Home contests also remain against the University of Richmond in a three-game set April 18-20. The final homestand is May 9-11 against St. Joseph’s.
George Washington already has defeated local opponents George Mason (twice) and Georgetown (once) at Tucker Field this season.
The team’s most recent home contest was Sunday (April 6) against Virginia Commonwealth University, a 5-2 loss. The start of the game was moved up to 10 a.m. because of rain in the forecast.
A couple of graduates of Northern Virginia high schools pitched in that contest. McLean High grad Aidan Carey threw a scoreless and hitless inning of relief for George Washington, as the freshman right-hander recorded a strikeout.
Langley High graduate Jack Hoeymans was the winner in relief for Virginia Commonwealth.
The George Washington baseball team isn’t the only college squad playing home games at busy Barcroft Park. The Marymount University women’s softball team plays on another diamond at Barcroft, having some 28 games on site this season, many doubleheaders.
The Saints have played softball at Barcroft since the 2023 season.
