Host W-L teams finish first in county track-and-field meets

Gabriela Netwall winning multiple girls events and Ian Crowley doing the same for the boys helped the two host Washington-Liberty Generals teams win the annual Arlington County outdoor track-and-field meets.

The girls won with 200 points and the boys with 191. Both Wakefield Warriors squads placed second in the high-school meet.

Netwall won four events: the 100 meters in 12.82 seconds, the 200 (26.12), the high jump (4-feet, 8-inches) and the long jump (16-7). Crowley won the 110 (15.08) and 300 (41.66) hurdle races, was first in the triple jump (37-4 1/4) and placed fourth in the pole vault, fifth in the 100 dash and 10th in the long jump.

Other top performers for the W-L girls were Eve Jungman winning the discus (107-7) with a second in the shot put, and Ella Kaplan with a victory in the triple jump (34-7) and a third in the 100 hurdles.

Washington-Liberty’s Morgan Brown was second in the 100, 200 and 400 races and Addison Schmmel was second in the triple jump and third in the pole vault.

Also for the Generals, Emily Buckwalter was second in the 800, Therese Johansson was runner-up in the 1,600, McKinley McGee was second in the 300 hurdles, and third were Albal Edsall in the 1,600 and Meg Lubas in the 800.

In addition to Crowley for the W-L boys, Carson Owens was a winner in the 200 (22.83) and he finished third in the 100 and fifth in the long jump. Emmett Engelhardt won the 800 (1:58.77) for the Generals and Benjamin Tahu was first in the high jump (5-10).

Nico Docena had a busy meet with a second in the 110 hurdles and thirds in the 300 hurdles and triple jump. Tommy Fowler was second in the high jump and fourth in the 800, Charles Gent was second in the pole vault and Brandon Kaplan second in the shot and third in the discus.

Washington-Liberty’s boys won the 4×100 and 4×400 relays.

The Wakefield boys had seven individual event winners: They were Ben Mitzen in the shot (43-2), Liam Keish in the 1,600 (4:29.75), Jackson Gray in the pole vault (13-0), Ben Chapuis in the long jump (20-3 1/2), Leonardo Hoil in the discus (107-9), Chris Gilpin in the 110 hurdles (11.06) and Noah Gunville in the 3,200 (10:19).

Mitzen was also second in the discus, as was Gilpin in the long jump, Alex Epstein in the 300 hurdles and Andrew Coe in the 3,200. Epstein was third in the 110 hurdles and pole vault, Travon Buckner was third in the long jump and Chapuis was fourth in the discus.

Leading the Wakefield girls was Grace Armitage. She won the 100 (15.93) and 300 (49.0) hurdle races, was second in the long jump and fourth in the high jump.

Ada Jordan (400, 1:00.27), Olivia Barr (shot put, 34-0) and Madeleine Wearing (pole vault, 9-0) were other individual winners for the Wakefield girls.

Wakefield also won the 4×100 (50.64) and 4×800 (10:02.23) relays.

Second for Wakefield was Corrine Breyault (high jump). Jullian Reck was third in the 100 and 200 and fifth in the long jump.

The Yorktown girls had three winners — Molly Hardwick in the 800 (2:27.68), Ellen Malloy in the 1,600 (5:29.32) and Sofie Keppler in the 3,200 (12:21.99).

Yorktown thrower Kaiya Ovando was second in the discus and third in the shot, Olivia Stafford was second in the 100 hurdles and Claire McArdle was second in the 3,200.

For the Bishop O’Connell girls, the 4×100 relay won in 4:28.72 and Sadie Smith was third in the 3,200.

For the Bishop O’Connell boys, Cameron Bowser won the 400 (50.06) and was second in the 200 and Johnny O’Donnell was second in the 400.
