The Overlee Flying Fish will be led by one of their own and a very familiar face when the Northern Virginia Swimming League begins its summer season in June.
The team’s new head coach will be Ryan York, who swam for Overlee from age 6 to 18, with the 2021 season his last, then was an assistant with the team the past two summers. He set team records for Overlee and also was a lifeguard at the pool.
York, 22, was named the new coach in recent weeks, replacing Aimee Hooper.
York knows all of the Overlee swimmers and is excited about taking over what has been the most successful team, as far as winning championships, in NVSL history. The Flying Fish have won 29 titles in the league’s highest Division 1, but none since 2015.
“I spent all of my summers at Overlee growing up, so I really want to be here and I’m ready to go,” York told ARLnow. “Aimee really built up the youth programs the last two years, and we hope that leads to another Division 1 championship. They know who I am and about my enthusiasm, and they know I bring the energy and will have the swimmers work hard.”
York wants his swimmers to be focused and committed during the short five-week summer regular season of meets.
York swam in high school at Meridian High School in Falls Church when it was George Mason High.
Overlee finished third in Division 1 with a 3-2 record last season and was second in 2023, finishing behind Chesterbrook and Tuckahoe.
“We haven’t been too far off from Chesterbrook and Tuckahoe,” York said. “We need to update our championship banners with another one, so keep an eye on us.”
Overlee’s season begins Saturday, June 14 at 9 a.m. on the road in Burke with a match against Old Keene Mill, which finished 0-5 in Division 1 last summer.
