With varying degrees of success, the Wakefield Warriors, Washington-Liberty Generals and Yorktown Patriots participated in different spring-break baseball tournaments in recent days.
Yorktown (7-5) had the best record of the three high-school teams, finishing 3-2 in the competition at Patriot Park in Fairfax.
The Patriots’ wins were over Lightridge, 4-2, Potomac Falls, 8-3, and Riverside, 9-4.
Jack Rubin homered and had five RBI in one of those victories. Cooper Lawson had two doubles in a game, Aidan McCracken had an RBI triple and John Rizzo had multiple hits.
Other contributing hitters were Anthony Rucker, Coby Casalengo, Joseph Black, Patrick Mellett, Jackson Ingram and Luca Feden.
Washington-Liberty (8-5) finished 2-2 with shutout wins over Stone Bridge, 6-0, and Chattanooga Christian, 10-0. Hank Thomson and Jack Keane were the starting and winning pitchers in those games.
Against Stone Bridge, Thomson allowed two hits, walked one and fanned five in six innings. Keane struck out 10 with no walks in six frames against Chattanooga, and added a hit and an RBI with the bat.
Sean Guffey had a triple and two RBI, Noah Hitzig had two hits and Henry Gerber a hit and two RBI in the Chattanooga win. Guffey had two hits and two RBI against Stone Bridge, and George Thompson had a hit and two RBI.
Wakefield (4-6) also finished 2-2, winning its first two games.
Cort Bringham, Adam Barrington, Mason Bull, Beau Branch, Chase Daub, Joseph Todd, Lucas Mejia and Charles Quinn were key hitters for Wakefield.
O’Connell 14-4 headed into spring break: The Bishop O’Connell Knights will enter the spring-break portion of their schedule with a 14-4 overall record, an 11-2 mark in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference and a five-game winning streak.
In a recent key WCAC victory, the host Knights nipped Gonzaga, 2-1, as right-hander Shota Fogus started and pitched five innings to get the win. He allowed one hit, one earned run and struck out six.
Right-hander Noah Haught worked the final two frames to earn the save, with four strikeouts and allowing one hit. With the bat, Haught had three hits (two doubles) and an RBI.
Truman Leckey had two hits for O’Connell and stole two bases. Chris Connolly and Aidan Kim had the other hits, and Chaz Walker had an RBI.
The victory ended O’Connell’s seven-game losing streak against Gonzaga, dating back to the 2022 season.
Kim had two hits and Connolly and Haught each had a hit and two RBI in a recent 8-7 conference victory over Bishop Ireton.
In their most recent game, O’Connell routed The Heights, 16-1, in conference play. James Robinson had three hits and three RBI in that win. Haught had three hits and two RBI, and Leckey and Walker each had two hits and three RBI. Drew Markey was the starting and winning pitcher, striking out six with no walks.
O’Connell defeated McNamara, 13-3, and St. Paul VI Catholic, 2-1, in other recent WCAC contests.
O’Connell was ranked fifth in the most recent Division I private-school state poll. Paul VI was ranked second despite the loss to O’Connell.
