Two Yorktown senior wrestlers earn Class 6 all-state honors

Two Yorktown High School wrestlers recently were recognized with all-state selections for their standout performances during the winter season.

Seniors Cambyses Khani and Basheer Hadi were chosen to Virginia High School League Class 6 all-state teams as a result of top finishes in the state-championship meet.

Hadi finished second in the 298-pound heavyweight division and Khani was third at 120.

Hadi finished 3-1, including a pin, in the state meet in Virginia Beach. He lost in the final to Christopher Funches of Grassfield High School of Chesapeake.

For the season, Hadi had a 42-5 record. The finish in the state meet was the highest of his career.

“He is a true example of how commitment and hard work in the offseason can pay off,” Yorktown coach Andrew Adams told ARLnow about Hadi.

Hadi won two region and two district titles during his Yorktown career, including both championships this past season.

Khani finished 4-1 in the state tournament. Three of Khani’s wins were by major decisions and the other by a technical fall.

Khani had a 37-6 record this season, and won more than 100 career matches. He participated in the state tournament all four years in high school.

This season’s third-place finish was his highest in the competition. Khani won two region titles and four district crowns for Yorktown, like Hadi won each this past season.

Hadi and Khani were the only wrestlers from Arlington public-school teams chosen to the all-state teams.
