How to celebrate Earth Day in Arlington: Volunteering, yoga and more

Celebrations of nature and environmental protection are happening across Arlington and Falls Church in honor of Earth Day today (Tuesday).

An array of nature hikes, stream cleanups, yoga sessions and other activities are scheduled to continue through this weekend and beyond, offering local residents a chance to participate in the global effort to support conservation.

GetGreen Arlington Earth Month Contest

When: Now through Wednesday, April 30

Arlington residents can compete in the county’s sustainability contest and earn points by completing eco-friendly activities. Prizes include milkweed seeds, gardening gloves and T-shirts.

Earth Day Stream Cleanup

When: Today from 5-7 p.m.

EcoAction Arlington is hosting a cleanup to remove litter from Bon Air Park and Four Mile Run. Participants should register online ahead of time, and an adult must accompany kids under 16.

Earth Day Island Yoga

When: Today at 5:30 p.m.

An all-levels yoga class with waterfront views is happening tonight at Island Time Bar & Grill on the Columbia Island Marina. A $25 class ticket comes with a beverage of choice. Taught by Northern Virginia-based instructor Erin Sonn, the event “will honor our planet with mindful movement, deep breaths and grounding poses.” Attendees should bring their own mats.

EcoExtravaganza fundraiser

When: Thursday from 6-8 p.m.

This annual EcoAction fundraiser benefits the organization’s tree planting efforts and Energy Masters Program. Tickets are $40 per person and come with dinner at the Florida-themed seafood restaurant Clare and Don’s. Students age 25 and under may attend for free with a valid student ID.

Volunteer service at Potomac Overlook Regional Park

When: Saturday from 9-11:30 a.m.

This community service project includes invasive plant removal and habitat restoration. Participants should meet at the picnic shelter near the parking lot and dress for the outdoors. Tools and instructions will be provided on-site. Registration is required ahead of time.

City Nature Challenge Hike

When: Saturday from 2:30-4:30 p.m.

This free hike encourages participants to document nature and wildlife using the iNaturalist app. The hike, led by Arlington Regional Master Naturalists, will focus on “vegetation, insects, amphibians and more.” Advance registration is required.

Earth Day Every Day Festival

When: Sunday from 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

This fourth annual festival off of Langston Blvd features live music, an art market and lots of educational kids activities. This year’s lineup includes an Arlington Public Library truck, a pop-up poetry booth from Arlington Cultural Affairs and a scavenger hunt.

Several Arlington restaurants, including Cafe Colline, Lebanese Taverna and Old Dominion Pizza, will be on site with refreshments.

Home Efficiency 101 class

When: Wednesday, April 30 from 6-7 p.m.

This free webinar will offer simple steps on how to reduce energy consumption and save on utility bills. EcoAction Arlington’s Energy Master program volunteers will be able to answer questions after the presentation.
