Arlington baseball teams all have at least one win during busy week

The Yorktown Patriots (8-6) split two games with their Arlington public-school neighborhood baseball rivals in recent days, defeating the Washington-Liberty Generals, 4-2, then losing to the Wakefield Warriors, 8-4.

The win over W-L was the Patriots’ 15 straight against the Generals (10-6).

In the victory, Cooper Lawson and Jack Rubin drove in runs, and Yorktown took advantage of defensive miscues to score other times in the high-school contest.

John Rizzo was the starting and winning pitcher. He pitched into the sixth inning, striking out seven and allowing three hits with three walks. He was helped by one double play.

Andrew Welch finished the game in relief.

Rizzo and Owen Woodward had hits for Yorktown and Patrick Mellett a sacrifice bunt.

For Washington-Liberty, Jack Keane pitched a complete game in defeat. Alex Frymoyer (RBI) and Hank Thomson each had a hit, Keane doubled and George Thompson singled.

Wakefield’s win over visiting Yorktown snapped a years-long 26-game losing streak against the Patriots, who had six hits and were hurt by four errors in the loss.

Beau Branch had one of Wakefield’s four hits to go with an RBI. Joseph Todd had a hit and two RBI and Matthew Hilscher had two RBI.

Ben Crowe was the winning pitcher.

Wakefield (5-8) ended the week with a 5-4 road loss to the Marshall Statesmen. Branch had two hits and an RBI in the loss, and Hilscher had a hit and one RBI.

Earlier in the week, Wakefield lost to the host Langley Saxons, 4-3, after taking a 3-0 first-inning lead on Cort Bringham’s three-run homer. Adam Barrington doubled in that inning. Langley scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh for the walk-off victory.

Washington-Liberty defeated Sidwell Friends, 6-1, then nipped the McLean Highlanders, 4-3, in games after the loss to Yorktown.

Frymoyer, Keane, Sean Guffey, Alex Bartl, Alex Goodell, Kailen Hackmann, Robert McDonald and Sam Jackman had big hits against Sidwell Friends, and Kyle Matsko stole home.

Against McLean, Robert Kilpatrick and Jackman each had a hit and one RBI, and Alex Goodell doubled.

Bishop O’Connell Now 18-4: The Bishop O’Connell Knights (18-4) had a 4-0 record through April 25 action at the South Atlantic Bank Invitational spring-break tournament in Myrtle Beach, playing South Carolina local teams.

The Knights defeated Waccamaw, 21-15, in their first game behind 13 hits. Each team made four errors in the seesaw contest, with nine pitchers used.

Noah Haught doubled, tripled and had four hits in the win. Jack Woda doubled, had three hits and three RBI. Truman Leckey added two hits and three RBI, Chaz Walker had two hits and three RBI and Chris Connolly doubled and had two RBI.

O’Connell routed Socastee, 15-4, in its second game as Haught had three hits with a double and two RBI. Walker Mcelwain also had three hits, Walker and Leckey two each. Woda had a hit and four RBI.

The Knights had 15 hits. Luke Masri was the starting and winning pitcher in four innings of work, allowing one hit.

In its third contest, O’Connell defeated St. James, 10-2. Haught had three more hits and was the winning pitcher. He struck out nine in five innings without a walk. Leckey homered and had two hits.

In its fourth game, O’Connell took advantage of four errors to top Georgetown, 12-8, for its ninth straight win. Haught and Nick Ferara each had a hit and two RBI and Leckey and Mcelwain each doubled.
