O’Connell grads help college soccer teams enjoy big success

Bishop O’Connell High School graduates helped two different Division III women’s college soccer teams enjoy significant postseason success in recent weeks.

Sophomore midfielder Sophie Viscovich helped the Washington University in St. Louis Bears win the national championship, finishing with an unbeaten 23-0-2 record.

Freshman forward Mia Salmon was the top scorer for the Springfield College squad of Massachusetts that played in two postseason competitions, finishing runner-up in an ECAC tournament, and with a 10-6-4 record.

Viscovich scored five goals, had seven assists and took a team-high 83 shots. She took three of those shots in the NCAA final, but did not score.

Two of her goals during the season were game-winners. Her 17 points were third highest on the team.

For her play, Viscovich was a first-team United Soccer Coaches All-Region VIII selection and an honorable-mention University Athletic Association choice. She also was honorable-mention all-conference as a freshman, when she scored two goals and had three assists.

At O’Connell, Viscovich was a two-time first-team all-conference selection. She led O’Connell in scoring as a junior and senior.

Salmon led Springfield with eight goals this past season. She scored the goals in eight different games, earning two game-winning tallies.

Salmon also had three assists.Her 19 points and 44 shots led Springfield.

For her effort, Salmon was chosen as the New England Athletic Conference’s Rookie of the Year and made second-team all-conference. In addition, she was selected third-team all-region.

She was an all-conference player at O’Connell.
