With just nine potential games remaining on its schedule, the undefeated Bishop O’Connell Knights (11-0) have no room for error in order to continue the squad’s long streak of winning 20 softball games in one season.
The girls high-school team has won 20 or more times for 30 straight spring campaigns.
O’Connell has played fewer games at this point this year than normal — a couple of games have been rained out and not yet made up and Washington Catholic Athletic Conference rival Carroll did not field a team this season.
O’Connell was on spring break this past week and the softball team had no games scheduled. The Knights have three regular-season WCAC contests remaining on the schedule. The next is set for Tuesday, April 29 at home at 4:15 p.m. against St. Paul VI Catholic.
A non-conference game against the McLean Highlanders was rained out earlier this month and has not yet be rescheduled, and may not be played. The Knights also have a conference game against Bishop McNamara that needs to be rescheduled.
“When we start playing again, we could have a lot of games in a three-week stretch,” O’Connell coach Tony Uccellini told ARLnow.
The WCAC tournament is set to begin for the Knights on May 6 with quarterfinal action. The defending champion would need to win three tourney contests to capture that title. O’Connell began this past week in first place in the WCAC standings.
Following the WCAC tournament is the Division I private-school state tourney, in which the Knights also are defending champs, having won 12 straight state crowns.
O’Connell could play as many as three more contests in the state competition.
O’Connell was ranked No. 1 in the latest Division I state poll.
NOTE: With an 11-0 record so far this season, O’Connell has won 65 straight games over four seasons.
