Yorktown overtakes W-L during all-Arlington softball showdown

In a seesaw girls softball game, the Yorktown Patriots eventually pulled away and defeated the host Washington-Liberty Generals in an all-Arlington neighborhood high-school clash.

Yorktown won the Liberty District contest, 20-9, after trailing by scores of 3-0, 5-2 and 9-6.

The Patriots were led by infielder Audrey Pocrass with four hits and nine RBI. Pocrass doubled three times and tripled once.

Kaiya Ovando had four hits and five RBI, Margaret Flannery-Goodman had four hits and four RBI, Sara Evans had three hits and two RBI, Sophia Giambalvo had three hits, Malena Cardinale had two hits and McKenna Gurgo had an RBI double.

In total, Yorktown had 19 hits.

Samantha Parker was the winning pitcher, with Lilah Grace Kresse throwing in relief.

Washington-Liberty had 14 hits, with Cara Bolejack and Zoe Schroeder each having three hits and two RBI. Celia Anbinder doubled, tripled and had three RBI, Alex Wilson had two hits and two RBI, and Lydia Schwartz had two hits.

In a non-district game following the contest against W-L, Yorktown lost to the host West Springfield Spartans, 7-5, after leading 4-2 in late innings.

Gurgo hit a two-run second-inning homer to give Yorktown a 2-1 lead, then Evans had a two-run double in the sixth and Cardinale an RBI single.

Washington-Liberty’s next game after facing Yorktown was against the McLean Highlanders, where the Generals were shut out 9-0.

Wakefield Has Recent Wins, Losses: In the Wakefield Warriors’ 1-0 road loss to the Langley Saxons, Juliet Milder had the team’s lone hit. The Warriors struck out 15 times.

Wakefield pitcher Regan Hughes allowed just two hits, no earned runs and struck out two.

In other games, Wakefield defeated visiting Alexandria City, 13-8, and lost to the host Marshall Statesmen, 8-4.

Tatum Oliver hit a grand slam against Alexandria City. Hughes, Reece Wilder, Hannah Nilame (four RBI), Elena Rochard and Kira Zoeller all had two hits. Wakefield had 13 hits.

Zoeller and Lucy Strawn had two hits each against Marshall.
