A first-round lead didn’t hold up the second day as the defending golf champion Marymount University Saints finished second in the Centennial Conference Championships.
The two-day, 36-hole women’s event was held at Waynesboro Country Club in Pennsylvania. Although finishing second, Marymount did not earn a berth to participate in the NCAA Division III tournament.
Marymount’s final team score was 332-357–689. Gettysburg won at 335-333–668, as the Saints led by three strokes after the first round.
“It was a competitive tournament and it just wasn’t our weekend,” Marymount head coach Rob Ferguson told ARLnow. “It was windy and we putted poorly both days.”
Marymount has finished first or second in that tournament every season since 2019, with the event not held in 2020 because of the pandemic.
Leading the Saints in this year’s tourney was junior Kate Parsons with a third-place finish, shooting 80-89–169. Freshman Eunice Change tied for fourth at 83-89–172 with junior Noelle Jensen tying for sixth with 85-89–174 along with freshman teammate Tinleigh Rusher at 84-90–174.
Tying for ninth was freshman Karry Lyu with 86-91–177.
“We have a very good team and are climbing to among the top teams in Division III,” Ferguson said. “We should be strong again next season.”
During the entire 2024-25 fall and spring seasons, the Marymount women won four tournaments, finished second in five and third in one.
The third came at this spring’s Virginia State Golf Association Women’s Intercollegiate Championship, with the Saints shooting 320-338–658.
Jensen shot 79-79–158 to tie for seventh to lead Marymount. Lyu (81-85–166) and Rusher (78-88–166) tied for 15th.
