With a couple of champions and other top finishers, the Arlington Wrestling Club had a strong showing at the Virginia Wrestling Association’s freestyle and Greco-Roman state tournament.
The individual champions were Basheer Hadi in the USA junior boys 185 freestyle and Greco divisions and Cameron Millsapps in the USA junior freestyle girls 155 weight class.
The tournament was held at Heritage High School in Lynchburg.
Hadi was 4-0, including a pin and two technical falls. Millsapps finished 3-0 with two pins and a technical fall in the finals over teammate Naria Medrano, who finished second. Also second was Danica Brown in the 16-under girls 135/140 Greco-Roman division.
Third for the Arlington club were Anthony Morales in the 16-under 175 freestyle and Greco divisions and Zachary Capps in 144 Greco.
Fourth were Paulina Mazzuchie in the girls 16-under 140 freestyle division and Marilyn Pardada in the girls 16-under 170 division.
“This was an incredibly tough tournament and throughout the day our kids collectively competed very well,” Arlington Wrestling Club coach John Leinberger ARLnow.
In the team standings, the Arlington club — which had 18 wrestlers participating — placed 12th in freestyle out of 202 teams and 18th in Greco.
As a result of their results, nine Arlington wrestlers qualified for the national tournament in July.
NOTE: Also at the state event, Yorktown High School’s Charlotte Bowman finished second in the USA junior girls 145 division wrestling for the Apple Wrestling Academy of Fairfax.
