In extra-inning road games played the same night, the Washington-Liberty Generals and Yorktown Patriots continued their winning ways in high-school baseball action.
In 10 frames, W-L (13-7, 7-4) nipped the Langley Saxons, 6-5, in a Liberty District contest. Yorktown (12-7, 6-4) rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the final two innings to top the South Lakes Seahawks in non-league action.
The win was the fourth in a row for Yorktown, while Washington-Liberty has won two straight. The one-run victory was the Generals’ fifth this season.
Washington-Liberty scored the winning run in the top of the 10th inning when Alex Goodell singled home the winning run with his second hit of the game. Alex Bartl pitched the final six scoreless innings in relief to get the win. He allowed one hit, struck out four and threw 92 pitches.
The Generals had nine hits, with Jack Keane (RBI) and Alex Frymoyer (double) having two each. Noah Hitzig and Hank Thomson each had one hit and two RBI, and Bartl added a hit. Each team made three errors.
Washington-Liberty also defeated Langley by a 6-5 score earlier this season. The Generals have one regular-season game remaining against Yorktown.
The 13 victories are significant for W-L, which won just seven times last season.
In Yorktown’s win over South Lakes, Leo Holt singled home the winning run in the top of the seventh inning. In the bottom of the frame, Grayson McCarthy earned a 10-pitch save, fanning two of the three batters he faced. Max Troiano was the winning pitcher in relief of starter Cameron Gonzalez.
Yorktown trailed 4-1 after five innings. In the sixth, Colt Monticello (three hits, two RBI) and Coby Casalengo had RBI singles, cutting the lead to 4-3. Holt and Jack Rubin also singled in that frame.
In the seventh, Aidan McCracken doubled then stole third, eventually scoring on Holt’s game-winning hit. Cooper Lawson and Jackson Ingram also had a hit each for Yorktown, and McCracken had two hits.
Yorktown has two Liberty District games remaining, against Washington-Liberty and Herndon.
O’Connell preps for state tournament: The Bishop O’Connell Knights (20-5) will play in the Division I private-school state tournament beginning Tuesday, May 13.
The Knights lost their first-round game in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference to visiting St. Mary’s Ryken, 5-3.
A number of O’Connell players were chosen to the 2025 all-WCAC baseball team for their performances this spring. Making first team were pitcher Shota Fogus, pitcher/infielder Noah Haught and catcher Jack Woda.
Second-teamers were outfielder Truman Leckey and pitcher Drew Markey. Honorable mention selections were infielder Chris Connolly, catcher/infielder James Robinson and pitcher Luke Masri.
