Wakefield novice four among Va. crew champions from Arlington

On the first of two weekends of Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association competition, the Wakefield Warriors had a champion in what is known as the novice states regatta.

The Wakefield girls novice 4 finished first in 6:29.1, coming in ahead of five other shells in the race on the Occoquan Reservoir. In the finals, Battlefield finished second in 6:35.7.

Members of the winning Wakefield four were coxswain Charlotte Goldwater and rowers Sarafina Fabrizio-Jacobi, Eva Essig, Liliana Freimark and Victoria Gaspar. Sarah Vest coached the four.

Other winners from an Arlington school at the regatta were Yorktown High’s boys freshman four in 6:02.8 and the Yorktown boys third eight in 4:46.5.

Second from Arlington schools were the Yorktown girls freshman four, the Washington-Liberty girls freshman eight, the Yorktown girls third eight and the W-L boys third eight. Third was the Yorktown boys novice eight.

The remainder of the state heats and championship races for all other shells are scheduled for Saturday, May 10 on the Occoquan.
