May 15 will not soon be forgotten for high-school baseball in Arlington — but for the wrong reasons.
All four squads suffered season-ending losses that Thursday in first-round tournament action. In a matter of a five-hour stretch, the county’s high-school baseball season was all over.
The Bishop O’Connell Knights (20-6) fell by an 8-2 score in an opening-round game of the Division I private-school state tournament.
In the public-school Liberty District tourney, the Wakefield Warriors (5-13), Washington-Liberty Generals (13-9) and Yorktown Patriots (13-9) also all were defeated in the first round.
Wakefield fell to the host Herndon Hornets, 3-1, W-L lost at home to the Langley Saxons, 7-4, in extra innings, and Yorktown was blanked at home by the Marshall Statesmen, 3-0.
O’Connell hurt itself by making six errors in the loss, as Cape Henry led 7-0 after three innings. The Knights had four hits and scored its two runs in the sixth. Chaz Walker had a hit and two RBI for O’Connell. James Robinson, Aidan Kim and Kamari Chisolm had the other hits.
Wakefield had seven hits in its loss to Herndon. Cort Bringham started on the mound for Wakefield. Bringham (double), Adam Barrington (two hits), Ben Crowe (RBI), Matthew Hilscher, Beau Branch and Mason Bull were among players who had hits for Wakefield.
For Washington-Liberty in its loss, the Generals were ahead 3-1 through five innings. The game was tied at 4 after eight, then Langley scored three times in the top of the ninth to win.
Sean Guffey had two RBI singles for W-L, Jack Keane had two hits and an RBI, Alex Frymoyer doubled and singled and Alex Goodell had a sacrifice bunt.
Yorktown was shut out by Marshall pitcher Nathan Lake. He pitched a two-hitter and struck out nine with four walks. Anthony Rucker and J.D. Rizzo had Yorktown’s hits.
