With three senior athletes combining to win seven events and as many as 11 others scoring team points, the Washington-Liberty Generals were big winners in the boys Liberty District track-and-field championships.
The Generals were first with 171 points, far more than the runner-up and host Wakefield Warriors with 114 in the high-school competition spread over two different weeks.
In all, Washington-Liberty won nine events and had athletes place high in nearly every event.
Leading W-L was triple-winner Carson Owens. He won the 100-meter dash in 10.95 seconds, the 200 in 22.11 and the 400 in 49.32.
Washington-Liberty’s Ian Crowley and Emmett Engelhardt each won two events.
Crowley won the 110 and 300 hurdle races in 14.78 and 39.20, respectively. He also was one of the team’s busiest athletes in the meet, finishing fourth in the triple jump, seventh in the shot put and running on the second-place 4×400 relay.
Engelhardt won the 800 (1:56.23) and 1,600 (4:22.84) and ran on the winning 4×800 relay (8:01.53) along with Tommy Fowler, Elijah Purdy and Henry Brys.
Charles Gent jumped 13 feet to win the pole vault.
In addition to his three victories, Owens was second in the long jump and ran on the fifth-place 4×100 relay.
Others had multiple top finishes for W-L, including Nico Docena with a second in the 110 hurdles, eighth in the 300 hurdles and 10th in the triple jump. Matthew Abramson was fifth in the 400 and triple jump and seventh in the long jump.
Fourth for the Generals were Brys in the 1,600, Purdy in the 800, Zachary Meehan in the long jump and Morgan Fritz in the 3,200.
Jackson Fowler was second in the 3,200 and fifth in the 1,600, Brandon Kaplan was second in the shot and seventh in the discus, Pierce Wardian was fifth in the pole vault, Tommy Fowler was sixth in the 400 and Jackson Wernick was sixth in the 3,200.
Wakefield has two winners: For the Wakefield boys, Ben Chapuis won the long jump (21-2) and Travon Buckner was first in the triple jump (43-8) and fifth in the long jump.
Wakefield’s Alex Epstein was active with a second in the 300 hurdles, a third in the pole vault, fourth in the 110 hurdles and sixth in the triple jump. Additional second-place finishes were recorded by Isiah Ledbetter (triple jump), Jackson Gray (pole vault) and Logan Ward (800).
Ben Mitzen was third in the discus and fifth in the shot. Ledbetter was sixth in the long jump.
Yorktown runner places second: Leading Yorktown was Reid Dalley with a second in the 1,600.
