Highlights were few for Arlington crew teams at famous, but this year weather-shortened, Stotesbury Cup Regatta.
Storms, heavy rain and dangerous water conditions on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia caused the semifinal and championship races to be canceled. Only the first-round heats were held.
First-, second- and third-place medals were awarded based on those heat times.
The four crew teams entered from Arlington high schools left disappointed they didn’t get to row more. But conditions weren’t acceptable: Some of the lane markers had been pulled loose by the storm and there was debris in the water.
Four Wakefield High School shells that were entered rowed fast enough in the heats to qualify for the semifinals.
The five-team defending champion Wakefield girls varsity eight finished fourth in its heat, barely missing third and earning a medal. The girls second eight placed fifth and the boys second eight was eighth. The boys varsity eight was 17th.
Yorktown High School head crew coach Brian O’Rourke said results from the time trial were fine for his team.
Yorktown’s boys junior eight finished sixth, with the girls lightweight four placing sixth and the girls second eight taking sixth, as well.
Yorktown’s girls junior four was eighth, the girls varsity eight placed 11th and the boys varsity eight 12th.
For Washington-Liberty, the boys junior eight finished third and the girls junior eight was eighth.
Boats from the four Arlington schools are participating in the Scholastic Rowing Association of America’s National Championship Regatta in New Jersey over the Memorial Day weekend.
