W-L, Wakefield, Yorktown have individual champs in region track meet

With two individual champions for each team leading the way, the Washington-Liberty Generals placed third in the girls and boys region outdoor track-and-field championships.

In addition, both Wakefield and Yorktown high schools brought home individual championship from the event.

At South Lakes High School, the boys scored 62 points, just three points out of second place, and the girls finished with 57. The Wakefield Warriors were fourth in the boys meet and sixth in the girls.

“I could go on and on about the wild regionals meet. We had some fantastic results,” Washington-Liberty coach John Bacon told ARLnow.

Leading the Washington-Liberty boys were winners Carson Owens in the 400-meter dash (48.53) and Emmett Engelhardt in the 3,200 (9:26.09). Engelhardt also was second in the 800, and Owens was third in the long jump and eighth in the 100.

Ian Crowley was second in the 300 hurdles, fifth in the 110 hurdles and fourth in the triple jump for the W-L boys, while Charles Gent was third in the pole vault.

Zachary Meehan was sixth in the long jump, Brandon Kaplan sixth in the shot put, Matthew Abramson seventh in the triple jump and the 4×400 relay was third, with Owens on that team.

Leading the Washington-Liberty girls were Eve Jungman with a victory in the shot put (34-10 1/2) and second in the discus and Gabi Netwall with a win in the 400 (55.12) and seconds in the 200 and long jump. She also was sixth in the high jump.

Also for the W-L girls, Alexis Lascano-Morley was third in the pole vault, Ella Kaplan was fourth in the 300 hurdles and tied for eighth in the high jump, and Morgan Brown was sixth in the 100 and 10th in the 200.

Wakefield competitors notch victories: Leading the Wakefield boys was dual champion Ben Chapuis in the high jump (6-2) and long jump (22-1 3/4) and triple-jump winner Travon Buckner (45-10 1/2). Buckner also was fifth in the long jump.

Wakefield’s Jackson Gray was second in the pole vault, Isiah Ledbetter third in the triple jump, Liam Keish fifth in the 800, Alex Epstein fifth in the 300 hurdles and ninth in the triple jump, Mickey Johnson sixth in the high jump, Logan Ward sixth in the 800 and Ben Mitzen eighth in the shot.

Leading the Wakefield girls was Grace Armitage. She finished second in the 300 hurdles, third in the 100 hurdles, fourth in the triple jump and fifth in the long jump. Olivia Barr was third in the discus and fifth in the shot.

Madeleine Wearing was fourth in the pole vault, Kayleigh Williams fifth in the discus, Dru Kukawa sixth in the 400 and Puri Oberkirsch seventh in the 400.

Yorktown has individual champ: Leading the Yorktown girls was champion Olivia Stafford in the 300 hurdles in 45.19. Stafford also ran on the second-place 4×800 relay and was seventh in the 100 hurdles.

Kaiya Ovando won the discus (119-5) and was ninth in the shot. Ga’najah Williams-Taylor was fifth in the 400, Molly Hardwick sixth in the 1,600 and Ellen Malloy eighth in the 1,600 and 10th in the 800. Malloy, Mary Hardwick and Molly Hardwick also ran on the 4×800 relay.

For the Yorktown boys, the 4×800 relay was third and Turner Holloway was eighth in the 110 hurdles.
