Yorktown girls fall in Class 6 state-tournament soccer semifinal

As has been the case since winning their first state soccer title in 2017, the Yorktown Patriots again were in contention this year.

But the squad fell just short of its goal, losing in the Virginia High School League Class 6 state tournament semifinals, 2-0, to the Deep Run Wildcats on Friday (June 13) at Glen Allen High near Richmond.

The season-ending loss snapped Yorktown’s 10-game winning streak.

Deep Run scored a goal in each half as the Patriots finished the season with a 16-4 record and won Liberty District and 6D North Region tournaments prior to the state competition.

Yorktown was 6-1 in the playoffs, with four shutouts this spring.

The Patriots were 1-1 in the state tourney, hosting and blanking the Robinson Rams, 2-0, in the first round.

Against Robinson, Mackenzie Reddan and Avery Stell scored the goals. Stell and Reese Montgomery had the assists. Elena Schultz made four key saves in goal.

In addition to the 2017 state championship, Yorktown also won the crown in 2019 and 2022.

NOTES: Through this season’s first-round state-tournament match, Yorktown was 9-0 all-time in VHSL playoff contests, with seven shutouts and outscoring opponents 23-2 … The 6D North Region tournament runner-up Washington-Liberty Generals (14-6) played in the state tournament for the first time,  losing an opening-round match to the host South County Stallions, 1-0, after allowing a first-half goal. South County went on to play in the state final against Deep Run.
