The McLean area has seen enough of the Yorktown Patriots this season.
In games the past three Friday nights, Yorktown has defeated a trio of Liberty District public-school rivals from that area. In order, the Patriots downed the Langley Saxons and McLean Highlanders, then on Oct. 3 routed the host Marshall Statesmen — located on the McLean/Falls Church border — 42-14.
The Oct. 3 victory, the Patriots’ third straight, upped the squad’s overall record to 4-2 with a 3-0 district mark.
“Those were three good wins. We are getting better each week,” first-year Yorktown coach Alec Hicks told ARLnow. “Now we have to keep that going.”
The winning formula has been the same for Yorktown in those three games. The Patriots have not turned the ball over, they capitalize opponents’ giveaways and bend but don’t break on defense.
Against Marshall, Yorktown built a 14-0 first-quarter lead, was ahead 14-7 at halftime, and then was 28-14 after three periods.
“In the second half we were a little more focused overall with our play, and I think we kind of wore them down,” Hicks said of Marshall. “I liked our energy.”
Leading Yorktown’s defense, as he often does, was senior lineman Bobby Shea. He recovered a fumble and returned it 54 yards for a first-quarter touchdown. Jack McCorry had an interception for Yorktown and Henry Royal recovered a fumble.
Marshall gained 249 total yards, but only 12 passing.
On offense for Yorktown, quarterback Samson Schneider was 13 of 17 passing for 187 yards and two touchdowns. His scoring passes went to Alex Hans for 38 yards and 18 to Colt Monticello, who added a rushing TD of six yards.
Jack Ezzedin had a 60-yard scoring run for the Patriots and Nate Randles ran four yards for a touchdown. Max Yoon booted six extra points.
Ezzedin rushed for 75 yards, Randles for 52, Samson for 34, Monticello for 12 and Hans for 10. Brady Owens caught five passes for 41 yards, Sammy Keiser four for 67 and Hans three for 61.
Yorktown had 371 total yards.
“Our offense and defense are both new this season, and we are getting better at both each week,” Hicks said.
Yorktown next will host the West Springfield Spartans (4-2) in a non-district home game at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10.
NOTE: Yorktown is 3-0 in the district for the first time since winning the title with a 6-0 mark in 2021. This season marks the first time Yorktown defeated Langley, McLean and Marshall in some order in consecutive weeks during the same season. The Patriots lost to all three in order during the 1986 campaign.
