Yorktown defeats Wakefield for 29th straight time in annual football showdown

The end result was a familiar story when the Wakefield Warriors and Yorktown Patriots met in their annual all-Arlington high-school football showdown.

With the bleachers full on both sides, Yorktown won for the 29th straight time over Wakefield with a 45-6 victory Friday night (Oct. 17) on the Warriors’ home field in Liberty District action.

Wakefield last defeated Yorktown in 1995. Many of the recent Yorktown victories over its county rival have been blowouts, including the most recent.

Yorktown improved to 5-3 and remained tied atop the district standings with the Washington-Liberty Generals (7-1, 4-0) with two games remaining. Those teams play Oct. 30 at Yorktown. Wakefield fell to 3-4, 0-3 with its third straight loss.

“That was one of our best performances this season,” Yorktown coach Alec Hicks said of the victory over Wakefield. “Our offensive line played powerful, and I think we wore them down. Our hustle was phenomenal all game.”

Yorktown led 17-0 at halftime, had productive running and passing attacks on offense, and on defense tackled well and held Wakefield to fewer than 200 total yards and only six first downs.

Yorktown gained 542 total yards, balanced between 296 passing from quarterback Samson Schneider and 246 combined rushing yards spread across the offense.

Schneider was 17 of 26 passing and threw three touchdowns, plus he ran for two scores and 44 yards. Overall, he accounted for 340 yards in production on offense.

“Samson was good and accurate throwing, and he ran well all game,” Hicks told ARLnow.

Schneider’s touchdown runs were for eight and 19 yards. His scoring passes went for 50 and six yards to Sammy Keiser (four catches, 85 yards) and 14 to Alex Hans (three catches, 48).

Max Yoon booted seven extra points and a 27-yard field goal.

Yorktown’s leading rushers were Jack Ezzedin with 83 yards, including a 51-yard scoring run, Nate Randles with 73, Colt Monticello with 42 and Hans with five. Randles also caught a pass.

Yorktown’s offensive line consisted of Teddy Sennott, Nikhil Eastman, Chris Layman, Shane Campbell and Benny Vandall.

On defense for Yorktown, Collin Damato had an interception, Bobby Shea and Andrew Cole had sacks, and Justin White had a tackle for a loss.

Other than a 75-yard second-half pass play from Judah Connor to Xavier Winkelmann (five catches, 120 yards) that set up the Warriors’ one touchdown, Wakefield didn’t mount any other scoring threats. The Warriors were only in Yorktown territory three times, twice by just five yards.

“Yorktown played very well and we didn’t and we didn’t make enough plays,” Wakefield coach Clarence Martin said.

Connor was 14 of 26 passing for 174 yards. Connor Morrison had three catches and Andrew Mason and Chris Gilpin two each. One of Mason’s catches was a five-yard touchdown reception. Saswat Aryal had 15 yards rushing.

Wakefield’s Santiago Aceves Villanueva had a sack to force a fumble that Jack Smith recovered. Josh Radka broke up a pass.

Wakefield middle linebacker Sean Perry was injured and did not play in the second half, which left holes in the Warriors’ defense.

The next games for the Arlington teams are Friday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. in district action. Yorktown hosts the Herndon Hornets (2-5, 1-2) and Wakefield faces the visiting Marshall Statesmen (3-4, 0-3).
