Arlington basketball teams fall in first round of region tournaments

The high-school basketball season ended abruptly for the final three Arlington public varsity teams still alive in postseason action with first-round losses in the 6D North Region tournaments.

In girls action, the Washington-Liberty Generals and Yorktown Patriots were defeated. On the boys side, Yorktown lost, as well:

  • Host Washington-Liberty (20-6) built an early 13-3 lead against the Chantilly Chargers, but lost 54-47
  • The Yorktown girls (13-10) lost on the road to the Centreville Wildcats, 54-37
  • The host Yorktown boys (20-7) never led in their 70-57 loss to the Oakton Cougars

In the loss for the W-L girls, the game began changing and the Generals’ lead evaporating when senior center, team leading scorer and district Player of the Year Eve Youngman missed much of the second quarter in foul trouble. That situation continued throughout the second half, as Youngman fouled out early in the fourth quarter.

Chantilly took the lead for good at 34-32 with 3:37 left in the third quarter.

Youngman had seven points and six rebounds before fouling out. Her younger sister, Anna Youngman, had a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds to go with three assists and two blocks.

Kathryn Wagener scored in double figures for the Generals, with Hannah Kelley netting eight.

In addition to Youngman being chosen as the district’s Player of the Year, she made first-team all-region along with Wagener, who also was picked first-team all-district. Anna Youngman was chosen second-team all-region and first-team all-district.

Riley Krohl of W-L made second-team all-district with teammate Dylan Plummer, and Millie Marston was selected honorable mention. Anna Youngman also made the all-defensive team and Krohl was chosen all-rookie co-Player of the Year.

The 20 triumphs were the girls team’s most wins in a single season in Washington-Liberty history.

The Yorktown girls took a 2-0 lead against Centreville, then quickly fell behind for good. They trailed 15-6 after one quarter, 29-18 at halftime and 44-27 after three periods.

Chosen first-team all-district and second-team all-region from Yorktown were center Olivia Shiplett and guard Eleanor Mahshie.

Yorktown’s Lily Porter and Elena Debevec made second-team all-district, while Ainsley Lomas, who missed many games because of an injury, was chosen honorable mention. Yorktown’s Sam Donahue made the all-defensive team, and Porter was named the all-rookie team’s co-Player of the Year.

The Yorktown boys never led against Oakton, falling behind 10-0, trailing 31-25 at halftime and 52-38 after three quarters.

Chosen first-team all-district and all-region for the Yorktown boys were guard Jake Coulam and forward James Davis. Chosen second-team all-district was guard/forward Sam Roosa with Davis and Walton Butler making first-team all-defense.

The Yorktown boys squad’s total of 20 wins tied the highest for a season in team history.
