Washington-Liberty boys soccer coach earns 300th career victory

Jimmy Carrasquillo continues to establish himself as the most accomplished public-school soccer coach in Arlington.

The longtime coach of the Washington-Liberty Generals boys team recently earned his 300th career victory. The breakthrough came May 19, when the host Generals blanked the Marshall Statesmen, 5-0, in a Liberty District tournament-semifinal match.

No other Arlington public school boys or girls head soccer coach has reached that milestone.

Of his teams’ 300 victories, 282 have come at W-L , where Carrasquillo has coached since 1999. The preceding year, Carrasquillo was the head coach at then-George Mason High School in Falls Church for one season, leading the squad to a Class A state crown and 18 victories.

Carrasquillo said he plans to continue coaching Washington-Liberty for the foreseeable future.

“Why not?” he told ARLnow. “I still have the passion each season to keep coaching, and I look forward to it every season. I don’t coach travel soccer the rest of the year. That keeps me hungry to coach high-school soccer at W-L in the springtime.”

The 52-year-old Carrasquillo is a full-time staff member at Washington-Liberty as a bilingual family specialist.

“I can’t see myself working here and not coaching soccer,” Carrasquillo said. “I still really enjoy it, and it all ties into the school.”

Carrasquillo’s 300 wins rank among the top 10 for those listed on the Virginia High School League’s record book for victories by boys soccer coaches.

Also at Washington-Liberty, Carrasquillo is a member of the football coaching staff for special teams, kicking and punting. He regularly announces boys and girls basketball varsity games during the winter season.

Carrasquillo grew up playing youth soccer in Arlington as a standout select and travel player. He was a four-year starter and all-district player for the boys varsity team at Wakefield High School, where he graduated in 1993. Carrasquillo then played on the men’s team at Montgomery College in Maryland.

Carrasquillo’s younger brother, Eddie, is the head boys soccer coach at Wakefield. Washington-Liberty and Wakefield play at least once each season. The Generals won this year’s matchup, 3-1, for Jimmy Carrasquillo’s 299th career win.

NOTE: The only high-school head soccer coach in Arlington who has more career victories than Carrasquillo is Alberto Starace. He is the longtime girls coach at private-school Bishop O’Connell, having nearly 700 career wins. Carrasquillo served as an assistant under Starace for four seasons at O’Connell, which competes in fall soccer action.
