The last four times the Yorktown Patriots competed in the 6D North Regional girls soccer championship game, the squad came away with the title.
But not in 2026. This spring, the defending region-tournament champion high-school team finished second.
The host Oakton Cougars won the 2026 title the night of June 4 by defeating Yorktown, 2-1 in overtime, in the region final. The match was decided in the second round of penalty kicks, which was a sudden death period.
The loss was Yorktown’s first this season, giving the Patriots a 17-1-1 overall record. Oakton improved to 13-3-3.
Yorktown blanked Oakton, 3-0, during the regular season this spring. Back in 2022, the Patriots had defeated Oakton in the region final, also on the Cougars’ home field.
In this year’s region final, Yorktown outshot Oakton by a significant margin, especially in the game’s first 20 minutes. Yet Yorktown managed only the one goal, coming with two minutes left in the match to tie the score at 1 when Claire Beasley scored.
“We had a lot of opportunities to score, but we couldn’t finish and find the back of the net,” Yorktown coach Hannah Davis told ARLnow.

Two Yorktown shots hit the cross bar and another a goal post.
“We came close a number of times,” Davis said.
This season, balanced scoring from many different players has been a strong point for Yorktown. The variety of scorers puts considerable pressure on opponents’ defenses.
Many different players took shots against Oakton, but only Beasley scored.
Yorktown had been limited just one goal in only one other game this season. In four postseason games this spring prior to the region final, 10 different Yorktown players scored goals. Overall, some 16 different players have netted goals for Yorktown this season.
Yorktown was 2-1 in the region tournament, winning its first two games at home. In those contests, Yorktown topped the Madison Warhawks, 5-2, in the semifinals after blanking the Chantilly Chargers, 3-0, in the first round.
Against Madison, five different players scored goals — Beasley, Matilda Van Voorthuizen, Lilly Thornblad, Bridie Meehan and Anna Larbalestier. Assists went to Larbalestier, Jessica Talotta, Emily Miller and Mackenzie Reddan.
In the win over Chantilly, Meehan, Lily Stout and Sammy Cancellare (one assist) scored goals. Beasley and Miller had assists.
Prior to winning the region tournament, Yorktown repeated as Liberty District tournament champs with a 2-0 record. The Patriots downed the Langley Saxons, 3-1, in the semifinals, then the Washington-Liberty Generals, 2-1, in the title match.
In the final, Beasley and Callie Conrad scored goals and Miller had an assist. Against Langley, Talotta, Cancellare and Elyse Markowski scored goals and Beasley had an assist.
Elena Schultz was in goal for all of Yorktown’s playoff games. She made multiple saves against Oakton, including two in penalty kicks.
Next for Yorktown is the Virginia High School League’s Class 6 state tournament, a championship the Patriots have won three times, the last in 2022.
Yorktown is scheduled to play a first-round game on Tuesday, June 9 on the road.
“I still believe we can win the state,” Davis said. “We’ll see how we rebound from this.”
