A commemorative train themed for America’s 250th anniversary will roll through Arlington tomorrow.
Railroad operator CSX will run the special train from Alexandria to D.C. on Tuesday, June 30. The train features two America250 locomotives — one with a stars and stripes theme and the other with an American bald eagle and “United We Stand” phrase. Accompanying the specially-designed locomotives are two heritage units featuring original 1827 Baltimore & Ohio colors and 10 historic executive business cars used for presidential travel.
The train will leave Alexandria Union Station (110 Callahan Drive) around 11:30 a.m., cross the Potomac River over the CSX Long Bridge and arrive at D.C.’s Union Station around 12:45 p.m.
A CSX spokesperson said railroads are a key part of telling America’s story, from the first lines in Baltimore to modern-day railroads.
“For nearly 200 years, our company and its predecessors have helped move the country forward,” a CSX spokesperson told ARLnow. “As we approach the nation’s 250th anniversary, this train brings that history to life — shaped by the talented team in Waycross, Georgia, who painted these locomotives, and the vital role rail continues to play today in connecting communities and powering the U.S. economy.”

The recommended public viewing point for photo ops is the Long Bridge over the Potomac River between Arlington and D.C. Other viewing locations include Long Bridge Park in Arlington, D.C.’s East Potomac Park, Hancock Park (beside the VRE L’Enfant station), Garfield Park (beside the Virginia Avenue Tunnel), Anacostia Park, Ivy City and Union Station, as well as Bladensburg Waterfront Park and Melrose Park, in Maryland.
CSX President and CEO Steve Angel will provide remarks at Alexandria Union Station before the train departs. After the commemorative event, the two locomotives will enter regular service across the CSX network.
