The success of Yorktown High School’s co-ed golf team has been a highlight of the school’s athletic program at the start of the fall sports season.
The Patriots have already won two tournament championships, the latest being the annual three-team Arlington County match. Prior to that, Yorktown won a multi-team tourney hosted by Madison High School.
Yorktown won the 9-hole county match with a 150 team score, five strokes lower than the two-time defending champion Washington-Liberty Generals. The competition was held at East Potomac Park.
“We had a good round with some good scores,” Yorktown coach Chris Williams told ARLnow.
Leading the Patriots in the county match was freshman Charlie Wisniewski with a 1-under-par 35, the lowest score in the event.
Also carding rounds in the 30s for Yorktown were Ginger Beall and Grey Luongo with 38s and Declan Cameron with a 39. Also playing for the Patriots were Ethan Newfield and Ben Niehaus with rounds of 40.
Yorktown last won the county match in 2023.
At the 18-hole Madison tournament, Yorktown won with a 295 total score at Twin Lakes Golf Course in Clifton, led by a 4-under 68 by individual champion Wisniewski. Also for Yorktown, Luongo shot 73, Newfield and Cameron 77 and Niehaus 80.
In a key Liberty District dual match already this season, Yorktown nipped the Langley Saxons by one stroke. Langley is a perennial district, region and state contender.
Here is how other Yorktown teams are faring during the fall season:
Field hockey: The Yorktown girls field hockey team is off to a strong start with a 5-2 overall record.
All of the Patriots’ victories are by shutouts, including two by 6-0 scores. The team’s losses were against the Madison Warhawks and Bishop O’Connell Knights by 3-2 and 3-1 scores, respectively. Both of those teams have been top area-wide squads in recent years.
Yorktown has been a perennial power in recent seasons, winning multiple postseason championships.
Girls volleyball: In girls volleyball, the Yorktown Patriots owned a 2-3 overall record through Sept. 8 matches. The team’s victories were over the Herndon Hornets in a Liberty District match and against the Centreville Wildcats in non-league play.
Cross country: The Yorktown Patriots girls cross-country team finished first in a recent four-team Liberty District meet at Lake Fairfax. Yorktown had a low winning score of 19 points, led by senior Ali Mathews. She won the girls race in 21:11.
Yorktown’s Aria Hedderly was second (21:36), Sofia Rosales third (21:43), Neve Jasser sixth (22:03) and Vivian Fatouros seventh (22:27).
In the boys meet, Yorktown finished second with 29 points, just one behind winning Washington-Liberty.
Leading the Yorktown boys were Joseph Boller in second (18:58), Sergio Sandoli in third (19:39) and Josh Daniel in fourth (19:44).
