The third time was the charm for golfer Logan Reilly over the summer when it came to two of the biggest golf tournaments the world has to offer.
First, the 2025 Bishop O’Connell High School graduate and current sophomore player at Auburn University qualified for the U.S. Open, played in June at the famed Shinnecock Hills Golf Club course in Southampton, N.Y.
Reilly did not make the 36-hole cut in the 72-hole event on the difficult Shinnecock setup, shooting 79-72-151 for 36 holes. But his two rounds included five birdies, four coming during his second round of 72.
Reilly’s finish might have been better if he hadn’t had a rough seven-over-par stretch over five holes during his first round amid windy and tricky conditions on fast greens.
A big highlight was making a 25-foot birdie putt during the first round and receiving a loud roar from the gallery.
“That was so cool. I waved to the crowd. There were people there everywhere,” Reilly told ARLnow.
The 19-year-old was playing the course for the first time, and said he enjoyed playing against the much more experienced professional players.
“It was crazy. I was super fired up to be there and playing in the U.S. Open,” Reilly said. “I hit the ball well, but the wind was a big factor and the course was very difficult.”
Reilly attempted to qualify for the U.S. Open the previous two summers, coming very close in 2025.
In August, Reilly played in the U.S. Amateur Championship at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa. He was playing in that competition for the third straight year against the best amateur players in the world, enjoying his biggest success to date.
This year, Reilly nearly reached the championship match, losing by a close result in the semifinals of the match-play portion of the event.
Overall, Reilly had a 4-1 match-play record. He won twice in extra holes, had a dominating 6 and 4 victory and clinched two very close 2 and 1 victories. During the opening 18-hole stroke-play round, Reilly shot a 2-under-par 69 to tie for ninth.
Prior to his summer achievements, Reilly was a standout and big factor in Auburn’s NCAA Division I men’s golf championship this past spring. He made the clinching putt in the title match against UCLA a few days before qualifying for the U.S. Open.
Overall, Reilly started 12 matches for Auburn as a freshman. He finished 5-0 in match-play competition and was chosen to the Southeastern Conference all-freshman team.
At O’Connell, Reilly was a standout player, winning two private-school state championships and placing among the top finishers in multiple conference tournaments.
In addition to his accomplishments at O’Connell, Reilly was a standout player for years in many youth tournaments. He was chosen as the 2024 Virginia State Golf Association’s Golfer of the Year.
A member at Loudoun Golf & Country Club, the Lovettsville resident won the VSGA Amateur Championship in 2024, along with the State Open of Virginia. He also was a member of the 2024 USA Junior Presidents Cup Team.
Between the U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur, Reilly tied for fifth by shooting in the 60s each round at the 64th Northeast Amateur Invitational. The tournament included many of the world’s top amateur players and was played at Wannamoisett Country Club in Rumford, R.I.
Reilly’s score in the 72-hole event was 69-64-67-69-269.
