Two tall refurbished trophies, named for individuals for the first time, were presented to the winning girls and boys high-school teams at this year’s annual Arlington County cross-country championship meets the afternoon of Sept. 24 at Bluemont Park.
The girls trophy is now named for former Washington-Liberty High School director of student activities Carol Callaway. The boys is named for former longtime Yorktown High School cross country coach Mark Stripe, who coached Yorktown for more than 25 years.
Stripe presented the trophy to the boys team champion and Callaway did the same for the girls winner.
“We were very glad to have Mark and Carol there,” said Washington-Liberty head cross country coach and meet director John Bacon.
Stripe and Callaway also helped run the meets that rainy day. Callaway directed the post-meet photo-taking sessions.
Stripe directed runners at the finish of the girls race, when the course had to be quickly reconfigured because of high water in one section, caused by steady rain during the event. He later took photos of the high water for posting online.
