Wakefield falls short, suffers third straight defeat in football action

The Wakefield Warriors fell to 2-6 overall with a 40-15 road loss to the Marshall Statesmen on Oct. 18.

The third straight setback kept Wakefield winless in the Liberty District high-school football standings with a 0-4 record.

The game stayed within reach until the third quarter, with Wakefield trailing 19-8 and controlling the ball deep in Marshall territory. The Warriors didn’t score on that possession, then quickly fell behind 40-8 before scoring their final touchdown on an 80-yard pass from Mark Williams to Andrew Mason.

Williams passed for 211 yards, with multiple completions going to Mason, who also had 21 yards rushing. Williams threw two touchdown passes.

Wakefield had 254 total yards, with 211 of them passing. Marshall had 381 yards rushing.

The Warriors have a bye week and don’t play next until Saturday, Nov. 2 on the road against the McLean Highlanders at 1:30 p.m. in a Liberty District game. McLean is 3-4 overall and 0-3 in the district, having lost three games in a row.
