Yorktown takes sole possession of first in Liberty District basketball

Another consistent and unselfish performance on the basketball court gave the Yorktown Patriots sole possession of first place in the Liberty District with a 3-0 record.

The boys high-school team (11-1) moved into that spot with a 67-32 home blowout victory over its Arlington rival Wakefield Warriors (8-5, 3-1) Tuesday night (Jan. 14).

Wakefield entered the game tied for first in the district and on a three-game winning streak.

“We had a lot of players score with nine, eight, seven and six points, and they did a good job as they have all season looking for each other well on offense,” Yorktown coach Joe Keimig told ARLnow. “It was a good team win.”

Wakefield never led. Yorktown took the lead for good at 5-2 on a three-point play by Nicholas Senkus. The Patriots began pulling away with an 11-0 first-half run, and were comfortably ahead, 32-11, at halftime.

Jack Rubin (six rebounds) and Jacob Coulam (five assists) each made three three-pointers and had 11 points each to lead Yorktown in scoring.

Brennan Pilot had nine points and four rebounds, Senkus scored eight with three rebounds, Austin Barbieri had seven points and four boards, James Davis added six points and as many rebounds, and Colin Madden had five points and three rebounds.

The Patriots attempted a lot of three-point shots — typical for the squad — making nine from five different players. Keimig said all five starters pretty much have the green light to attempt three-pointers, as long as they are good shots.

Wakefield had played a physical game in a one-point victory over the Marshall Statesmen the night before. “We had time off and they didn’t, and I know they had a tough game,” Keimig said

Dyson Beaty led Wakefield in scoring with eight points against Yorktown, with Shane Morrison and Kooper Odar (five rebounds) having six each.

NOTE: The home game was just the third this season for Yorktown. The Patriots will have multiple home games the rest of the way.
