As she savors a region championship in winter competition, Yorktown High School’s Kaiya Ovando now turns her attention to the spring athletic season.
But first, a quest for a state title looms.
During the winter, Ovando participates in indoor track and field, where she recently won the 6D North Region shot put championship.
Her winning throw of 34-7.5 was a personal best for both indoor and outdoor. She has one more meet remaining — the Virginia High School League’s Class 6 championships — in coming days.
Also during the current winter season in the shot put, Ovando had a second-place finish with a throw of 33-5 feet and a third at 32-7 in other meets.

Ovando also throws the discus during the spring’s outdoor track-and-field season. Last spring, she won the Liberty District title in that event, was third in the region and ninth in the state. In the shot, she finished fifth in the district and seventh in the region.
In softball, Ovando has been a versatile two-year starting catcher/infielder and power-hitting middle-of-the-order batter for Yorktown. She’s belted multiple home runs for Yorktown entering the 2025 spring season.
Ovando would like to play softball in college, but hasn’t ruled out track and field at the next level, as well.
