Yorktown wrestler goes 3-1, places second in state tournament

Basheer Hadi turned in the top performance from an Arlington school at the state wrestling tournament, when the Yorktown High School senior placed second at the 285 heavyweight division.

Hadi lost by a 7-2 score in the title match at the Virginia High School League Class 6 state competition in Virginia Beach.

Overall, Hadi had a 3-1 record in the competition, with a first-round pin followed by two regular decisions. He lost in the final to Christopher Funches of Grassfield High School of Chesapeake.

For the season, Hadi had a 42-5 record. The finish in the state meet was the highest of his career.

After not placing in the state last season, Yorktown coach Andrew Adams said Hadi dedicated himself to offseason training and made an incredible leap to the state finals this winter.

“He is a true example of how commitment and hard work in the offseason can pay off,” Adams told ARLnow.

Hadi won two region and two district titles in his career.

Yorktown fellow senior Cambyses Khani finished third at 120 pounds, compiling a 4-1 record.

Three of Khani’s wins were by major decisions and the other by a technical fall. He was pinned in his loss by the eventual champion.

Khani had a 37-6 record this season and won more than 100 career matches. He participated in the state-tournament all four years in high school. This season’s third-place finish was his highest in the competition.

He also won two region titles and four district crowns in high school.

Also participating from Yorktown were Logan Futrell at 138 and Neil Alleman at 165. Allenman went 1-2, with a loss to the champion and a place finisher. Futrell was 0-2, defeated by the champion in the first round.

Washington-Liberty High School’s Josue Hernandez (113), Evan Cronin (157) and Bilegjarga Miyaragchaa (175) participated in the state. Cronin and Miyaragchaa had 1-2 records and Hernandez was 0-2.

Chris Majano (138), Anthony Morales (175) and Jaden Delgado (215) from Wakefield High School participated in the state meet, each finishing 0-2.
