Two accomplished athletes from Wakefield High School have been selected to participate in the 2025 USRowing Under-19 National Team Selection Camp, held this coming summer.
The camp is to help participants prepare for the 2025 World Rowing Championships. At the camp it will be determined which shells the rowers will be members of at the World Championships.
Mira Meek, a senior, and Tony Madigan, a junior, earned invitations following years of dedication to the sport, performing well at the national level while testing their endurance, strength and technical skills among top athletes throughout the country.
As members of the under-19 team, Meek and Madigan will spend a month training and testing in San Diego prior to competing at the Aug. 6-10 World Championships in Trakai, Lithuania.
“This is a historic achievement for these two Wakefield athletes,” Wakefield crew coach Russell Topp said. “Their hard work, talent and dedication to the sport is impressive and commendable.”
A rower since the eighth grade, Meek has been a member of Wakefield shells that have won three state championships and have twice placed in the top five at the Scholastic National Championships.
Last spring, Meek and her teammates won the Dee Campbell Trophy for the girls junior eight category at the famed Stotesbury Cup Regatta in Philadelphia.
With the Potomac Boat Club program, Meek has raced with coaches Carol Dinion and Matt Madigan for five seasons, most notably winning the Head of the Schuylkill and placing 10th at the Head of the Charles in the single scull this past fall.
Meek has committed to row at the University of Virginia.
Tony Madigan has been rowing since the seventh grade. He is a past state and national champion, achieved as a sophomore.
Last summer when rowing for the Potomac Boat Club, Madigan was a champion at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta in St. Catharines, Ontario. In addition, he has won the Head of the Schuylkill multiple times and placed in the top five at the Head of the Charles twice.
