The Yorktown Patriots’ latest victory over the Washington-Liberty Generals in baseball action accomplished two things.
The 7-2 win extended Yorktown’s long winning streak over its Arlington rival to 16 games, starting with a victory during the 2017 high-school season.
In addition, the victory meant Yorktown had the best record of 3-1 against county public-school rivals again during the 2025 regular season, something that has been the case dating back for many years.
The Patriots were 2-0 against W-L this spring and 1-1 against the Wakefield Warriors. Wakefield was 2-2 against county opponents and Washington-Liberty 1-3.
Yorktown also defeated Arlington private-school team Bishop O’Connell this season.
The May 12 contest between Yorktown and W-L ended the regular season for both squads. The teams finished with identical records: 13-8 overall and 7-5 in the Liberty District. It’s possible the rivals could meet again in the district tournament.
In Yorktown’s 7-2 win, Grayson McCarthy hit a two-run homer, Colt Monticello had an RBI triple and run-scoring double, and Owen Woodward had a run-scoring single and stole a base. Anthony Rucker and Jackson Ingram singled and had a sacrifice bunt.
On the mound, McCarthy started and Max Troiano and Cameron Gonzalez pitched in relief.
Washington-Liberty had an early 2-0 lead, then host Yorktown scored four times in the bottom of the third inning and led the rest of the way.
For the Generals with the bat, Sam Jackman doubled and had two hits. With one hit each were Hank Thomson, Nick Socknat, Alex Bartl and Jack Keane.
Yorktown edged W-L, 4-2, in the team’s first meeting this season.
