Softball players continue their success in the collegiate ranks

A number of former standout softball players on high school teams from Arlington continue having success participating in the women’s college sport this spring.

Washington-Liberty High graduate Bridget Bartz batted .353, hit two home runs and had 18 RBI for the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. The junior starting shortstop had 30 hits, including six doubles, and played in 32 games. Her two home runs came in the same contest.

This season was the best of three for Bartz for the Division I team. In those three seasons, Bartz has played in 96 games.

Wakefield High graduate Abby Kohan was a junior starting pitcher and second baseman for the Division III Dickinson College team.

On the mound, the right-hander had a 6-10 record and threw 92 2/3 innings with 43 strikeouts and only 19 walks. She pitched in 20 games, including 17 starts.

With the bat, Kohan hit .276 for sixth best on the squad. Three of her 24 hits were doubles. Kohan drove in 13 runs and she stole three bases on three attempts.

Yorktown High graduate Zoe Brennan was a sophomore outfielder for the Division III Gettysburg College team. Brennan played in 19 games, hitting .481 with two doubles, two RBI and five steals in as many attempts.

Bishop O’Connell High graduate Sofia Anderson was a freshman utility player for the University of California-Davis Division I squad.

Anderson played in 10 games and scored four runs.

Bishop O’Connell High graduate Sophia Taliaferro was a freshman infielder on the Syracuse University Division I team. She appeared in 33 games and made three starts. Taliaferro had two hits with an RBI in eight at-bats, scored 11 runs and stole two bases.

Bishop O’Connell High graduate Madelynn Bates was a fifth-year player on the Division I St. Francis University team.

The pitcher finished with a 4-2 record and 4.76 earned run average in 39 2/3 innings with 18 strikeouts. She had one save. Bates pitched in 15 games, starting six times, and threw two complete games.

With the bat, Bates had three hits in 19 at-bats.

Bates previously played at Division III Randolph-Macon College.

Washington-Liberty High School graduates Emilie Doty, a junior pitcher, and Ava Lansbury, a sophomore catcher, played for the Division III Smith College team. Doty won four games and threw 130 innings with 98 strikeouts. She appeared in 27 games, with 22 starts, throwing 11 complete games.

Lansbury started 23 games. She had five hits and three RBI.

Bishop O’Connell High graduate Katie Kutz is a sophomore pitcher on the Division I Oklahoma State University team.

With the season still underway, the right-hander had a 7-5 record with a 4.67 earned run average. In 60 innings, Kutz had 56 strikeouts. She had appeared in 24 games with 11 starts and had one save.
