Yorktown softball team enjoys a strong finish to the regular season

An up-and-down regular season ended on a high note with three straight victories during a key stretch for the Yorktown Patriots in softball.

In addition, the girls high-school team (10-10) finished 4-0 against Arlington rivals, defeating the Wakefield Warriors and Washington-Liberty Generals twice each. That also was the case last spring.

The Patriots now will be a top-four seed in the postseason Liberty District tournament.

Yorktown’s most recent wins over Wakefield and Washington-Liberty were by 10-2 and 11-3 scores, respectively, with Samantha Parker the winning pitcher in each, giving her eight victories this season.

Against Wakefield, Audrey Pocrass smacked a solo homer and had a three-run double. Yorktown took control by scoring seven runs in the second inning.

Also in the win, Noa Kammerman hit a solo homer, Bethany Panza had a two-run double, Malena Cardinale and Kaiya Ovando had RBI doubles, Chloe Ellis had a run-scoring single, McKenna Gurgo doubled and Kassen Foreman and Margaret Flannery-Goodman had hits.

In the win over Washington-Liberty for Yorktown, Foreman, Gurgo and Sara Evans (two hits, two RBI) each had two-run singles. Cardinal and Sophia Giambalvo had RBI doubles, Ovando swatted a solo homer and added a sacrifice fly and sacrifice bunt, Flannery-Goodman had a hit and an RBI groundout, and Pocrass singled.

Yorktown had 13 hits.

For the season, Ovando, Pocrass and Gurgo all have three home runs. Ovando has 12 homers for her career at Yorktown and Pocrass 10.

For Washington-Liberty, Zoe Schroeder (two hits) and Celia Anbinder hit solo homers, Paula Lopez-Landeo had two hits and Giuliana Horne doubled. The team had eight hits.

In another all-Arlington showdown, Wakefield routed Washington-Liberty, 17-1 behind 17 hits. With three hits each for the Warriors were Regan Hughes, Kira Zoeller (three RBI), Juliet Milder and Julia Mitzen. Hannah Nilame, Tatum Oliver and Lucy Strawn all had two hits, with Reece Wilder having a hit and three RBI.

Hughes was the winning pitcher.

Anbinder had two hits, including a double, for W-L.

Wakefield was 2-0 against W-L this season.
