Arlington soccer teams aim to repeat last year’s postseason success

Last spring’s postseason results were the most successful ever in the same season for Arlington’s high-school varsity soccer teams.

Of those six public-school squads, three played in region-tournament championship matches — one winning a title — and all three advanced to Class 6 state tournaments.

As the Arlington teams start the regular season this week, they’re hoping for similar playoff success.

Among those squads, the Wakefield Warriors had the highest playoff finish a year ago, placing second in the boys Virginia High School League state tourney. Prior to that, Wakefield was the 6D North Region tournament runner-up and lost in the semifinals of the Liberty District tourney.

The Warriors ended with a 12-6-3 overall record, finishing 5-3 in three postseason tournaments for head coach Eddie Carrasquillo’s team. Wakefield won the Arlington Cup for having the best performance against its two county public-school rivals.

“Nobody counted on us getting this far, so we made our school proud,” Carrasquillo told ARLnow at the end of last season.

The state-tournament appearance was Wakefield’s second in program history.

Wakefield enters the new campaign having graduated numerous top players from a year ago.

Junior goalie Andrew Jackson is expected to be a top returner for Wakefield this season. Senior defender Jerry Lopez Felix is another top returner.

On the girls side, the Yorktown Patriots also enjoyed a strong postseason last spring. Yorktown finished with a 16-4 record and won Liberty District and region tournaments before falling in the semifinals of the Class 6 state competition and compiling a 6-1 playoff record.

The loss in the state semifinals ended the team’s 10-game winning streak.

Yorktown also graduated some key players in 2025, but has multiple top returners that include senior defenders Maren Williams and Elyse Markowski and sophomore forward Mackenzie Reddan.

Markowski and Reddan were first-team all-district and all-region players a year ago.

Also enjoying postseason success in 2025 was the Washington-Liberty Generals girls team. The Generals finished with a 13-6 record, competed in the championship games of the Liberty District and region tournaments — losing to Yorktown each time — and received a berth in the Class 6 tournament.

Washington-Liberty and Yorktown played one another three times last spring, with the Patriots winning each match. The county rivals have one regular-season meeting scheduled this spring: Friday, April 17 at Yorktown.

Top returners for the Generals will be senior midfielder Sullivan Allen and senior forward Hayden Lee.

Back on the boys side, Washington-Liberty and Yorktown are perennial contenders to win postseason titles, but came up short last spring. The Generals finished with a 10-5-2 record, going 0-2 in the playoffs. Yorktown was 5-6-4 with a playoff loss.

Senior defender David Toepel is a top returner for W-L.

NOTE: The highly anticipated and always spirited annual match between the W-L and Wakefield boys teams, coached by brothers, will be the final regular-season game on Friday, May 8 at Wakefield. Washington-Liberty is coached by older brother Jimmy Carrasquillo, who has yet to lose against Eddie in multiple meetings.
