Led by the individual champion and three other golfers placing in the top 10, the Yorktown Patriots won the recent Don Roth Warhawk Invitational tournament.
Yorktown comfortably won the one-day, 18-hole, 17-team high-school golf event at Twin Lakes Golf Course in Clifton with a 295 team score. The host, the Madison Warhawks, placed second with 309.
The event was played on the Lakes Course at the 36-hole venue.
For Yorktown, the early-season tournament win was the first in several years. The Patriots had finished second in three August tourneys in recent seasons, including in the 2022 Warhawk Invitational.
“We have a deep team with a good mix of new and returning players. So we figured we would be competition this year,” Yorktown coach Chris Williams told ARLnow. “We were hoping for a top-five finish.”
One of those newcomers was freshman Charlie Wisnieski. He was the event’s individual champion, carding a personal low score, by two strokes, with a 4-under-par 68.
Wisnieski was 2-under after the first nine holes, then added two more birdies on the back nine, including one on the final hole.
“Charlie plays a lot of tournament golf, so this event was not too big for him,” Williams said. “He was consistent the whole round.”
The tournament was the debut competition for Wisnieski as a member of the Yorktown team. He was informed he would play in the event only the afternoon before.

Recording Yorktown’s second-lowest individual score was senior Grey Luongo, with a 73 to tie for fourth. Tying for eighth with 77s were junior Ethan Newfield and another freshman, Declan Cameron. The team’s other score was an 80 by junior Ben Niehaus, who tied for 19th.
Cameron recently won the junior club championship at Washington Golf and Country Club, defeating Newfield in the title match.
The Warhawk Invitational was the second competition of the season for Yorktown. A few days earlier, the Patriots tied for third with a 327 team score at the 19-team Statesmen Invitational, hosted by Marshall High School, at Bristow Manor Golf Club in Prince William County.
Senior returner Ginger Beall had Yorktown’s lowest score with an 81. Newfield, Luongo and Niehaus shot 82 and senior Ainsley Gary 90.
“We are excited for the team’s potential this season,” Williams said. “We are pretty deep and we have solid players.”
The next competition for Yorktown is the annual nine-hole, three-team Arlington County championship match on Wednesday, Aug. 19. Along with the defending champion Washington-Liberty Generals and Wakefield Warriors, the team will play on the East Potomac Park course in D.C.
Wakefield shot a 348 team score this season at the Statesmen Invitational. Miles Maravilla shot 83 and Eliana Procida 85 to lead Wakefield.
Defending 6D North Region tournament champion W-L is expected to also have a strong team again this season with some key returning players. The Generals also won the Liberty District tournament for the second straight year last season.
Yorktown placed second in the district and third in the region last fall.
