Falls Church homeless shelter will reopen for the winter next month

Falls Church leaders have ratified the city’s contract supporting homeless shelter operations during the winter months.

The City Council approved the agreement with Friends of the Falls Church Homeless Shelter as part of the consent agenda on Tuesday night, with no comment by members.

The shelter, located at a city-owned property at 217 Gordon Road, will be open nightly from 6 p.m.-8 a.m. from Nov. 15 to March 31, with 24/7 operations on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.

With the city’s permission, operating hours can be extended when the weather is particularly inclement.

The shelter has a maximum nightly capacity of 10 men and two women, and during the 2025-26 winter season it served 23 different individuals. Because of space limitations, an additional 93 individuals could not be accommodated and were referred to other overnight options.

The facility is managed for Friends of the Homeless Shelter by FACETS, a Fairfax County organization. Those seeking shelter must be at least 18 years old and be a resident of either Falls Church or Fairfax County.

Volunteers provide hot meals and deliver them each night to the shelter. They also provide breakfast items, other food staples and cleaning supplies.

The facility has showers and also offers life-skills classes.

For the fiscal year ending June 30, Friends of the Falls Church Homeless Shelter reported donations totaling $151,406, expenses of $141,310 and net assets of $616,117, based on filings with the Internal Revenue Service.
