3 Ways Parents Can Help Teens Manage “Back to School” Stress

It’s very common for teens to feel extra stress during the Back to School period. From tests & papers to sports & clubs, it’s a lot! Especially in an area like Northern Virginia, where education is so highly valued. Here are three strategies that we recommend to our therapy clients for managing stress and maintaining positive relationships with their teens during Back to School:

Meet Students Where They Are: When your teen vents to you about their day, listen. Being “that person” your kids can vent to is the most powerful way you can show genuine support. From time to time, mirror their mood, even if their reaction seems a little dramatic by adult standards. Show you’re listening with eye contact and by repeating what you hear.

Resist Giving Unsolicited Advice: People may pay handsomely for your guidance during your work day, but with your teen, offering advice they haven’t asked for can be counterproductive for your connection. Instead, ask: “would advice be helpful now or do you just need me to listen?” Next, tell them you believe in their ability to handle what’s in front of them.

Practice & Model Self Care: As Back to School season unfolds, it’s important to ask yourself how you are practicing self care. Taking time to recharge positively impacts the entire family, especially during intense periods like the fall. You can also support your teen by modeling the stress management techniques that work for you and keep you grounded.
