The YMCA renovation plans would remove all indoor tennis courts from its facilities currently located in Virginia Square / Clarendon. If approved, this change would eliminate the most accessible indoor tennis option in Arlington.
Indoor tennis plays a unique role in community health and recreation. Tennis is a lifelong, social sport that supports cardiovascular health, mobility, balance, and mental well-being for players ranging from children to senior citizens. Unlike many fitness options that are primarily solitary, tennis fosters connection, intergenerational play, and sustained community engagement.
Arlington already has extensive indoor fitness and aquatic infrastructure, including multiple public indoor pools and a wide concentration of gyms and private fitness studios—one public aquatic center is located just 0.5 miles from the current YMCA tennis facility. By contrast, indoor tennis access in the county is extremely limited, with most alternative options requiring expensive private club memberships or travel outside Arlington.
Once this infrastructure is removed, replacing it is extraordinarily difficult.
Community members who value equitable access to diverse forms of recreation may wish to stay informed and engaged as plans move forward.
