Blending Persian art and abstraction to explore identity, migration, and belonging, hear about Ilchi’s practice and work. Starts at 6:30pm.
Hedieh Javanshirt Ilchi, Artist in Residence, and MoCA Arlington Senior Curator, Blair Murphy, will discuss Ilchi’s practice and the work she’s focused on during the 8-week residency at the Innovation Studio.
Ilchi’s creative practice is a navigation of her multifaceted experiences as an immigrant. By combining conventions of Western abstraction with conventions of Persian art, Ilchi explores contradictory painting processes and the ways in which they can be melded into a hybrid visual language. These pictorial clashes echo the erasure and distortion of cultural identities, evoking allegories of intrusion and invasion and moving beyond the personal to reference contemporary and historical interference.
Talk will begin at 6:30pm.
