We are honored to welcome Dr. Eli McCarthy, Georgetown University lecturer in Justice and Peace and Theology. In a talk titled The Ecumenical Movement of Just Peace: Time to Center Active Nonviolence and Let Go of ‘Just War’?, he will share about the streams of just peace reasoning that have developed in the United Church of Christ and World Council of Churches, as well as within the Roman Catholic church.
He will reflect on the implications of this for critical questions related to the centrality of Jesus’ nonviolence and the status of just war reasoning in the Christian church. Time for discussion will follow the talk.
Dr. McCarthy serves as a Just Peace Fellow with Franciscan Action Network, is on the Catholic Nonviolence Initiative steering committee, and coordinates the DC Peace Team. He is active in organizing Christians for Ceasefire and Just Peace around Palestine and ending violence in Gaza.
