The Spruce Quartet

The Spruce Quartet will be performing two string quartets from very different composers, Beethoven and Shostakovich, but both interpret Russian themes and music. First, Dmitri Shostakovich’s 8th String Quartet (1960), one of the most popular string quartets for good reason. This gut-wrenching work was dedicated “to the victims of fascism and war”, and reflects Shostakovich’s experience under an oppressive regime in the Soviet Union. Second, the quartet will perform Ludwig van Beethoven’s 8th String Quartet (1808). This work is the second of three “Razumovsky” quartets, which Beethoven wrote under a commission by the Russian ambassador in Vienna, Count Andreas Razumovsky.
