DC Street Hockey to Host Fifth Annual City of Origins Tournament on October 4

October 2, 2014

On Saturday, October 4, DC Street Hockey will host the fifth annual City of Origins Tournament at Raue Pond (4646 Seminary Road, Alexandria, VA). Ball drop for the first game is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. with the championship at 7:00 p.m.

This unique event will feature local street hockey enthusiasts from the Alexandria Seminary and Arlington Barcroft Leagues, with players aligned according to their birth location or their favorite National Hockey League team. This year’s participants will represent Washington, DC (2), Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Metro NY/NJ, Boston/Buffalo, Canada, and Midwest.

Each team will play three round-robin games, with the top four teams advancing to a single-elimination tournament. The 2013 playoff participants included the teams from Canada, Pittsburgh, Northeast, and Philadelphia. Team Philadelphia won in 2013, making them the three-time defending tournament champions; they will be led by 2013 tournament MVP Charlie Mahtesian, who led his team with four goals. They defeated Pittsburgh which has made the finals in 3 of the 4 years with no championships as of yet.

Family, friends, and hockey fans are encouraged to attend throughout the day. In addition to the hockey games, there will be other exciting events including a Hardest Slapshot Competition and Breakaway Contest. Scott Macquarrie and Kevin Roby won the 2013 Slapshot Competition with shots registering more than 85 miles per hour in their respective age brackets. Last year featured a skills competition/breakaway competition which was exciting but this year an all Women’s Ball Hockey Game will take it’s place to showcase numerous local players at 1:30PM on Saturday.

The City of Origins tournament is being sponsored by DC Street Hockey, HockeyNinja.com, Nando’s, NiceCream Factory, Nando’s Peri Peri, Royal Bank of Canada, The Jackson Clinics Physical Therapy, Acura TLX and USA Ball Hockey. Nicecream will be out during the day selling their great products.
