Encore Stage & Studio announces open registration for 2018
theatre summer camps for ages 4-18.

Arlington, VA – Encore Stage & Studio, Northern Virginia’s Award-Winning Children’s Theatre, is delighted to announce its 2018 summer programs. Encore summer camps provide a fun and safe environment for children and teens to explore theatre arts. “This is an exciting summer for us,” says Sara Duke, Executive Director. “We are looking forward to a new partnerships, expanded programs and providing multiple week options. Sessions are filling up fast!”

Encore Stage & Studio’s Summer 2018 camps begin June 18 and continue through August 31, with multiple one, two and three week sessions. For ages 4-9, Encore offers an introduction to theatre and dance in a nurturing and supportive atmosphere. These programs are focused on building up the confidence of the youngest performers. Students ages 8 – 12, develop their performance skills through a variety of topic based programs, such as musical theatre in Broadway Bootcamp and comedy in Summer Nights Live! Back by popular demand, Encore Stage & Studio has expanded its three-week theatre conservatory, Stage Door, by opening an additional location in Falls Church, VA. Encore is starting a Shakespeare Intensive designed to give the most committed theatre students an innovated performance experience.
Lastly, Encore Stage & Studio is proud to partner with Lola Lombard of Lola’s Laboratory for two camp sessions. In Lola’s Lab, story characters invite the campers along for an interactive theater experience. Kids activate inside the story, mobilizing their creative program solving skills and become the heroes through expressive art, drama, movement, creative writing and more.

Amazing Adventures| June 18–22, 2018
Adventure is out there, and Encore will help you find it! This session is jam-packed with heroic escapades, discovering lands unknown and more! Will there be detours along the way? You won’t want to miss your chance to participate in these amazing adventures!

Encore Presents Lola’s Lab–NEW!
June 25 – June 29, 2018: Zoopossible Kingdom
The wise King of Zoopossible has a big idea to sustain his “green” kingdom. But the prince-zoologist goes missing when he finds out that it involves a royal marriage to his neighbor! Our story comes to life when campers become citizens and animals of Zoopossible, using their creative skills combining art, movement, drama, creative writing and more, to help the prince and save Zoopossible.
July 2 – July 6, 2018: Captain Kaleidoscope
Off the Isle of Black and White, a young sea captain sails under the stormy skies and catches something that changes everything his land has ever known to be true. A rainbow. Imaginations will be dipped in amazing shades of fantasy as campers activate in expressive art, movement, creative writing and more to help the captain in bringing back the colors to the Island. No camp July 4.

It’s Elementary
Join us this summer for an exciting theatre adventure! At It’s Elementary, Teaching Artists will help students learn to work as an ensemble to perform short, original plays. Students will have the chance to try out their acting skills, create props and scenery for their performances, play theatre games, and experiment with dance and movement. Students will also enjoy performances by professional guest artists throughout the summer. Each session features a unique theme and a final performance for family and friends. Students will be divided into age groups.

July 9 – July 20, 2018: Whodunit? Be a dashing detective! From secret agents to super spy kids, uncover and act out the hilarious and mindbogging mysteries!
July 23 – August 3, 2018: Happily Ever After Make your Once Upon a Summer into Happily Ever After! From dragons and wizards to brave princesses and princes, bring classic tales to life as you embark this royal adventure!
August 6 – 17, 2018: Kings, Queens, and Courtly Figures Live like a king or queen! Break magic spells as we relive classic stories near and far!
August 20 – August 31, 2018: Fantastic Voyage Set sail with Encore on your greatest journey yet! Make your way through the seven seas, soar over the moon or discover new heights in our fantastic voyage-the imagination’s the limit!

Modern Day Myths | June 18 – June 22, 2018
Have you heard about the daring adventures of Odysseus or the epic feats of Hippolyta and the Amazons? What if those heroes and heroines lived in today’s world? In this one-week camp students will devise and perform their very own modern day myth determining important morals, creating characters, and constructing stories all while building their theatrical skills.

Summer Stories | June 25 – June 29, 2018: Playwriting
Put your imagination to the test in this one-week camp! Students will turn their favorite stories into memorable scenes and skits and use their creativity to write brand-new plays while also enjoying theatre games, ensemble-building activities, and more. Camp will conclude with a performance of the students’ brand-new, original works. Staff to student ratio 1:8.

Season Sampler | July 2 – July 6, 2018 (no camp July 4)
Can’t get enough of Encore onstage? Explore four upcoming shows from Encore’s 2018-2019 season in this fun camp! Each day, we’ll focus on a new script and skill set, including training in stage combat, musical theatre, and more. This innovative camp is perfect for budding actors and eager audience members alike! Staff to student ratio 1:8.

Scenes For Tweens
Ready for a summer of theatrical fun? During Scenes for Tweens, students will develop their performance skills through workshops in character study, movement, improvisation, ensemble building, and more. They’ll then put their new skills to the test while working to create a scripted performance for family and friends.

Each session has a unique theme from exploring the opposites of tragedy and comedy to Shakespeare and even jiving to your favorite Broadway musicals! Participate in multiple sessions or repeat a session you’ve enjoyed in the past as the performance material and skill-building classes change each year. Students will be divided into age groups. Each session will culminate in a performance.

July 9 – July 20, 2018: Tragedy vs. Comedy
Explore acting opposites of tragedy and comedy and decide for yourself which will reign supreme! Actors will delve into the extremes of both comedic and dramatic acting styles as well as the skills needed for both. Culminating in a performance of scripted scenes, students can embrace both their inner clown and tragedian.

July 23 – August 3, 2018: Broadway Bootcamp
Push your musical theatre skills to the limit in a focused two week ensemble atmosphere. Geared toward musical theatre lovers and newbies alike, this camp will build music, dance, and acting skills through classes and rehearsals for a musical theatre showcase! Start on your path toward triple-threat status and learn all about what it takes to make it on Broadway.

August 6 – August 17, 2018: Shakespeare Clowns & Comedies
Tackle Shakespeare’s famous comedies in this two-week camp. Bolster your understanding of the Bard’s language and performance techniques as you embody his famous clowns, enact hilarious misunderstandings, and attempt to decipher twins in disguise!

Get the ultimate improvisation experience to stretch your creativity while learning to trust your instincts! In this one week camp, students will explore various improv techniques including games, short-form improvisation, and character work. Want to take it to the next level? Make it a two-week experience by building on skills learned in Improv-a-thon in our Summer Nights Live camp!

Coming to you live from Arlington, VA it’s Summer Nights Live where you take center stage! Explore everything sketch-comedy from developing an idea to finalizing a script in this one-week side splitting spectacular. Want to make it a two-week experience? This camp pairs perfectly with our Improv-a-thon camp, where students will build improvisation skills that feed into their sketch-comedy work! Staff to student ratio 1:8.

Stage Door
Ready to embrace the spotlight? Participate in a fully-staged musical production with Stage Door!
In this conservatory-style program, you’ll work to sharpen your acting, singing, and dancing skills each morning, then immediately put those skills to the test as part of our daily rehearsal process. This camp experience is led by a director, music director, and choreographer, and the curriculum is enhanced by workshops with guest artists. Past workshop topics have included stage combat, clowning, makeup design, and physical comedy. As the camp builds towards public performances of a fully-staged musical, you’ll be challenged to fully engage your creativity, to develop a memorable character, and to work as part of a team while gaining valuable stage experience.
Runs in conjunction with Encore’s Tech Camp.

June 25 – July 13, 2018 (no camp July 4): Shrek, Jr.
Once upon a time, in a far away swamp, there lived an ogre named Shrek. One day, Shrek finds his swamp invaded by banished fairytale misfits who have been cast off by Lord Farquaad, a tiny terror with big ambitions. When Shrek sets off with a wisecracking donkey to confront Farquaad, he’s handed a task – if he rescues feisty princess Fiona, his swamp will be righted. Shrek tries to win Fiona’s love and vanquish Lord Farquaad, but a fairytale wouldn’t be complete without a few twists and turns along the way.
Performances: Thursday, July 12, 2018 at 7:30pm and Friday, July 13, 2018 at 2:00pm

July 9 – July 27, 2018: Peter Pan, Jr.
Wendy Darling loves to tell stories to her brothers, Michael and John. But when her father announces she must move out of the nursery, Peter Pan comes to visit the children and whisks them away to Neverland. Their journey introduces them to the Lost Boys, Mermaids, Indians and even the infamous pirate, Captain Hook! It’s Peter to the rescue when Wendy is taken captive by the dreaded captain, who has his own sinister plans in mind for our hero.

July 23 – August 10, 2018: Bye, Bye, Birdie YPE
A loving send-up of the 1960s, small-town America, teenagers, and rock & roll, Bye, Bye, Birdie remains as fresh and vibrant as ever. Teen heartthrob Conrad Birdie has been drafted, so he chooses all-American girl Kim McAfee for a very public farewell kiss. Featuring a tuneful high-energy score, plenty of great parts for kids, and a hilarious script, Birdie remains one of the most popular shows in schools across the country.

Tech Camp

Interested in developing your technical theatre skills? Here’s your chance to get backstage!
With just three weeks to put together all of the technical elements of a show, you’ll be challenged to bring your best, most creative self to camp every day. Each morning, you’ll focus on exploring technical skills including scenic design, costuming, stage management, and more. Afternoons will be spent turning designs into reality by creating set pieces, props, and costumes. By the third week of camp, you’ll be ready to present your designs to the public and run a seamless show backstage. Throughout each session, your work will be supplemented by guest artist-led workshops on topics such as stage combat, sound design, and lighting as you prepare for two public performances. Runs in conjunction with Encore’s Stage Door camp.

One Act Wonders
Want to pack as much theatre as possible into just two weeks? Hone your performance and technical theatre skills in the fast-paced environment of this innovative camp! Under the guidance of professional directors and designers, students will have the opportunity to participate as both actors and designers/crew members as they channel their creative energy, talent, and enthusiasm into two fully-staged public performances.
July 16–27, 2018: The Importance of Being Earnest & Pygmalion

Shakespeare Intensive
August 13 – August 31, 2018: Hamlet
Encore’s Shakespeare Intensive will challenge students to take the reigns as they present a fully staged production of Hamlet. Guided by professional teaching artists, actors will approach the Bard’s most famous work from the perspective of actor-directors. Through text analysis, movement and voice classes, and character development exercises the ensemble will focus on staging Hamlet in a contemporary setting. The intensive is suitable for both students who have experience working with Shakespeare’s text and those who are new to his plays and want to round-out their theatrical skills.

Performances: Thursday, August 30, 2018 at 7:30pm and Friday, August 31, 2018 at 7:30pm
