July 22, 2024 (Washington, D.C.) – Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA) today introduced the National Urgent Recruitment for Skilled Employees (NURSE) Visa Act, legislation that would address the nationwide nursing shortage by making visas available to foreign nurses working in areas where the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has determined there is a nursing workforce shortage.

“Nurses are the backbone of our nation’s health care system – they deliver lifesaving, quality care despite unprecedented challenges. As our health care system grapples with an increasing number of retiring nurses and high demand for skilled nursing professionals, we are approaching a critical tipping point where acute nurse staffing shortages are driving burnout leading to a compounding cycle,” said Rep. Don Beyer. “My bill, the NURSE Visa Act, would bolster the nursing workforce by allowing qualified foreign nurses to fill these gaps and ensuring that hospitals and clinics remain adequately staffed to maintain the high standards of care that Americans expect and deserve.”

Rep. Don Beyer today urged House consideration of his legislation, the AI Foundation Model Transparency Act, following a statement by actress Scarlett Johansson raising questions about whether OpenAI used her voice without authorization in the development of a new AI product. Beyer serves on the House leadership-appointed bipartisan Task Force on Artificial Intelligence, is vice-Chair of the Artificial Intelligence Caucus, and is a leading legislator in the U.S. House on AI.

The AI Foundation Model Transparency Act, introduced by Beyer and AI Caucus Chair Anna Eshoo last year, would prompt the establishment of transparency standards for information that high-impact foundation models must provide to the FTC and to the public, including how those AI models are trained and information about the source of data used. The bill has been endorsed by organizations representing and supporting creators and creative industries including SAG-AFTRA, the Authors Guild, and Universal Music.

Earlier this week, Amazon employees rolled up their sleeves to meet the urgent needs of DMV residents. More than 600 Amazon volunteers built hygiene kits with Clean the World, a social enterprise focused on providing recycled soap and hygiene supplies to those who have limited access to essential items to help prevent diseases. Amazon  committed to deliver over 50,000 hygiene kits to community partner MAP International to support families displaced by disasters. The kits include basic relief supplies, including soap, shampoo, toothpaste and other necessary products to provide for students and their families’ daily sanitation needs.

The volunteer event is part of Amazon’s Global Month of Volunteering, which is happening throughout the month of May. During the annual initiative, Amazon employees from more than 50 countries join together to support causes they’re passionate about across hundreds of organizations in their communities. Last year, Amazon team members volunteered for more than 4,500 events supporting over 1,200 nonprofit and community organizations around the world – participating in a variety of events during the month-long initiative from kayak cleanups, home food delivery services to hygiene-kit building, literacy tutoring, habitat restorations, and more.
