The Arlington County Bar Foundation recently held its annual Donor-Donee Reception at the Arlington County Courthouse. The event focuses on the various community charitable organizations that the Foundation funds. The annual presentation of the Campbell-Smith-Thompson Award is also made at this event. The Foundation presents the award to a Board member who has made extraordinary contributions to the philanthropic mission of the Foundation throughout the year. This year, the Campbell-Smith-Thompson award was presented to Sudeep Bose.
During his Chairmanship and his six years on the Board, Bose has excelled in memorializing the rich heritage of the Arlington legal community through social media, photography and videography. He used his news media experience and business acumen to improve how the Foundation communicates with its supporters, grantees and well-wishers.

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) prevented two Alexandria, Va., residents from carrying their handguns onto their flights yesterday, Thursday, Sept. 29. These gun catches came on the heels of another gun that was caught a day earlier, which resulted in three guns caught in a two-day span.
Thursday morning a woman was stopped with her .380 caliber gun among her carry-on items. It was not loaded. Later in the afternoon, a man was stopped with a 9mm handgun loaded with 14 bullets, including one in the chamber. He also had an additional 14 bullets among three gun magazines. The two incidents were not related.
Fifty-one artists will be featured in the ‘Scapes exhibit at the Falls Church Arts gallery from October 8 through November 12. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, October 8, at 7:30 pm. Artists will be on hand to share their processes and inspirations. Juror and internationally renowned landscape artist Bryan Jernigan will speak about the jurying process. This event is free and open to the public.
The exhibit theme, “landscapes, memoryscapes, seascapes, dreamscapes,” challenged artists to contemplate the “‘scapes” that inhabit their world–inner or outer, real or imagined, representational or abstract, macro- or microscopic–in this all-media show.
The Langston Boulevard Alliance (LBA) has announced that due to the rainy weather forecast, for Saturday, October 1, the Walking Tour for Area 3 is being relocated.
The Plan Langston Boulevard Walking Tour and Information Tent provide an informal opportunity for residents, business owners, community members and other Langston Boulevard stakeholders to explore the Preliminary Concept Plan. “It’s very easy to meet with project planners, ask questions, and provide feedback,” said Ginger Brown.
While Southern states brace for the impact of Hurricane Ian, Lost Dog & Cat Rescue Foundation (LDCRF), a pet rescue organization, has been preparing their Rescue Care Center for an emergency intake. In partnership with BISSELL Pet Foundation, LDCRF has committed to taking in 60 dogs and cats from southern partners to allow for the critical sheltering of homeless pets from the storm.
It takes a village. BISSELL Pet Foundation, a national animal welfare organization, is facilitating the evacuation from two Florida shelters, Citrus County Animal Services and Suncoast Humane Society. The rescued pets are being sheltered at Greater Birmingham Humane Society before being transported by Charleston Animal Society to partner facilities including the LDCRF Rescue Care Center.

APAH was joined by its partners, funders, supporters, and the U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs to cut the ribbon and commemorate the building’s opening.
Located at 3445 Washington Boulevard, just 1,500 feet from the Virginia Square-GMU Metro, Terwilliger Place is a 160-unit affordable rental community, featuring a modern 6,000-square-foot ground floor space for American Legion Post 139. The certified EarthCraft Gold building also includes community and multi-purpose spaces, a counseling office, and a business center. Terwilliger Place has a 50% veteran preference, and 26 units are deeply affordable to households earning 30% of the area median income (AMI).
Join VDOT, Arlington County and the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority, to break ground on improvements to safety, traffic flow and enhancements to accessibility and connectivity for bicyclists and pedestrians. The project will reduce Boundary Channel Drive from four lanes to two in order to construct an eight-foot-wide eastbound sidewalk and a twelve-foot-wide westbound shared-use path, install roundabouts on Boundary Channel Drive just west and east of I-395, reconfigure the ramps between I-395 and Boundary Channel Drive and adding crosswalks along Boundary Channel Drive. The project also features a new shared-use path linking the Mount Vernon Trail to Long Bridge Park, ultimately connecting with the existing one that parallels the southbound George Washington Memorial Parkway ramp to I-395 southbound. VDOT is administering construction of the project, which began the week of Sept. 12 and is expected to be completed fall 2023.
Sept. 22, 2022–The team behind “Dani’s Twins,” a documentary capturing the rare, perspective-changing journey of a quadriplegic woman, announced today its acceptance of the coveted Audience Award at the recent DC Shorts Film Festival. “Dani’s Twins” was named the audience favorite among the 77 films comprising the festival lineup.
“We couldn’t be more thrilled about this outcome,” says star and producer, Dani Izzie. “The audience was super engaged during the Q&A following our opening night screening. I hope they take with them the film’s themes of respect and inclusion for parents with disabilities.”
